The ACLU has the point on the anti-Scout effort

In close association with the National Education Association's Gay and Lesbian Caucus. Make no mistake, this powerful, well funded wing of the NEA is also responsible for the attacks on the scouts:

A couple of weeks ago I resigned my 15 year membership with the NEA and UEA. On a tip, I had run across the NEA-Gay/Lesbian Caucus newsletter on the Internet. (www.nea-glc.org/Newsletter/ layout%20dec2000%20nea.glc.pdf)
In that document, a letter is reproduced. It’s from the President of the NEA to the Chief Executive of the Boy Scouts of America and says, “The purpose of this letter is twofold: to express NEA’s strong opposition to the Boy Scouts of America’s practice of discrimination against gay youth and leaders; and to put BSA on notice that, until it halts this practice, NEA and its affiliates will work to insure that the public schools fully disassociate themselves from BSA and its message of exclusion and intolerance....”

Here's an excellent, albeit older, article that highlights the union's political activities, its obeisance to the diversity crowd, and its connections to leftist nonprofits, observing how NEA financial support for ideological interest groups like People for the American Way furthers its anti-school choice agenda:
