Blacksburg social activists listed as missing following suspected arson

The fire's cause had not yet been determined in what police are calling "a very vague crime scene."

By Shay Barnhart 981-3665 The New River Valley Current

PEARISBURG - Giles County sheriff's investigators are looking for two Blacksburg social activists who haven't been seen since Thursday morning, when a cabin in Newport that was home to one of them was destroyed by fire.

Sue Daniels, 44, who lived in the cabin, and her friend, Niklan Jones-Lezama, 40, have been listed in a national database of missing people, said Lt. Willie Lucas of the Giles County Sheriff's Office. Newport firefighters were called to Daniels' cabin on Spruce Run Road outside Newport about 7:20 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters found what turned out to be an animal's remains, probably a stray dog, in the rubble and called investigators, Lucas said.

They are probably already in the concentration camp that Bush built after he stole the election.

Body found near fire site

Though the body has not been officially identified, the searchers think the body is Niklan Jones-Lezama, one searcher said.

NEWPORT - Searchers located the body of a man Saturday morning in Giles County who could be one of two social activists missing since fire destroyed a cabin where one of them lived.

The Giles County Sheriff's Office had not officially identified the body, which was taken Saturday afternoon to the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke to determine the cause of death. Authorities have been looking for Niklan Jones-Lezama, 40, and Sue Daniels, 44, since a cabin in which Daniels had been living burned Thursday morning. No cause has been determined for the fire, but it is being investigated as an arson.

DOUBLE VIGIL FRUSTRATES FRIENDS OF TECH VICTIM

Published on December 1, 2004. Page: A1

The night before she died, Virginia Tech biologist Sue Daniels asked a panel working on women's issues in Argentina: How do you deal with violence against women in your community? It's a question people in this community still were asking Tuesday night when 75 of them gathered in the rain on Tech's Henderson Lawn for a candlelight vigil.Police say they think the 44-year-old human-rights activist was killed Nov. 18 in a murder-suicide by fellow activist Niklan Jones-Lezama,

I'll tell ya, the area around VA Tech is very conservative, would be considered as "red-neck" country to the visiting city dweller, but if you go into Blacksburg where VA Tech is, it's a real zoo.

Hehe I go there often, not much of a night life in the woods lol.

Yeah, I checked after the election, and Bush carried Montgomery County by 9% points(state result). Still less than the surrounding counties where Bush's lead was 20% points of more lol.

Maybe Montgomery County is a state 'bellwether' lol.

I lay still as if dead, my clothes soaked in symbolic blood, my face painted white, my head covered with a black shroud. Niklan lay nearby, in the awkward position of the dead...his eyeglasses crooked, his arm folded and leg twisted. A heavy sob escaped my mouth occasionally; Nik cried quietly and almost continually. We listened as beautiful voices called out the names of those murdered, in a never-ending song of sorrow. Though we could not see them, we knew there were thousands of people walking slowly by, grieving deeply. It was November 18, 2001, one of the most powerful and beautiful days of my life-- the 12th anniversary of the massacre of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper, and her 15 year-old daughter, in El Salvador, at the Jesuit university, by soldiers trained at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Ten thousand people, carrying ten thousand crosses, processed in solemn grief by the gates of Fort Benning that day. Written on each cross was the name of a person killed by soldiers trained at the School of the Americas. Most laid their crosses, along with banners, signs, flowers, pictures, and other memorials to the dead, on the huge chain link fence blocking the roadway onto the base. So many crosses were laid on the fence that it soon was a solid wall...but hundreds of thousands more would be needed to represent every victim of this school for civilian warfare.

(...snip)

Correction, Bush carried Montgomery County by 11%. My numbers were from right after the election, 11% was the final count.

I got bored, and curious so I did some checking. How Montgomery County(VA Tech) voted vs it's surrounding counties.

Montgomery County - Bush wins by 11%

Floyd County - Bush by 25%
Pulaski County Bush by 25%
Roanoke County Bush by 30%
Giles County - Bush by 17%
Craig County - Bush by 30%

Just to throw it in, My county, Carroll. Bush won by 36%. Our area of VA is what keeps it good ol' red, cheers!

A dog found in the rubble...hmmm.

Wow, this sort of reminds me of an incident that happened when I was attending (2004 ACC FOOTBALL CHAMPION) VIRGINIA TECH in beautiful Blacksburg, Virginia in the late 70's! A couple of students I knew, that had this fondness for large quantities of beer and weed, lived in a small house several miles outside of Blacksburg. One day while watching TV, consuming suds and inhaling reefer they accidentally dropped some ashes and caught the sofa on fire. Using their lightning fast reflexes and razor sharp minds they poured their beers on the sofa to put out the fire! When they went to get another beer from the frig they found that they were out. So they both got in the car (yeah, I know) and drove into town to buy more beer. While away the smoldering sofa caught fire again and burned the house to the ground. Their poor dog was trapped in the house and died in the fire. They were so bummed out about the poor dog, that I think they actually quit partying for a week or two.

I'll bet these two social activists are just off somewhere mourning the loss of their stash and fido.

Virginia Tech biologist? It reminds me of an old song...

Far beyond the fields of Blacksburg - in a field of rye,

Stands an old deserted outhouse, known as VPI.

Hokie, Hokie, Hokie High;

Tech, Tech - Blacksburg High!

Solar X, Solar Y.

The Hell with Tech - VMI!

Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Sooooweeee!

Interesting story about the Bush election:

We put a green/yellow Bush farm team sign up in front of one of our old red barns, facing our rural highway. After the election, one of the young tree farmers came up to us and said, "I done what you wanted me to do," nodding his head vaguely in the direction of the barn.

"Done what?" I asked.

"Went on yonder up to the school and voted for 'im," he replied.

"Oh!" I was taken aback. Trying to think quickly I asked, "Who else didya vote for?"

"No un," he said looking worried, "jist your guy." Then he added "All-a m'buddies came, too." Then he pulled himself up straight and said, "I may not be smart, like y'all, but I know enough to trust y'all 'cause I know you are the only ones round here that can make any sense of all this."

I was deeply embarrassed (and humbled). We thanked him for voting, but urged him not to follow without verifying in future. My spouse shared the Freerepublic motto of "Trust but verify."

Interesting story. With those first time voters, it's good to keep them in the game, and on our side.

My county threw out the 'who has the most campaign signs' theory.

4 years ago there were allot of Gore signs but I knew we would win.

This year there were SKerry signs, and bumper stickers EVERYWHERE. I was a little concerned. We still won by 36 points lol.

Perhaps the effectiveness of the sign, was the placement and coloring of the sign: flat against the barn, away from our house, in John Deere green/yellow .
