D.C.'s Team Officially Renamed the Nationals

The Major League Baseball club scheduled to play next season in Washington was officially renamed the
Nationals this afternoon, as District Mayor Anthony A. Williams joined club officials and a lunchtime crowd of a few hundred onlookers at Union Station in unveiling the team's new logo.

"Baseball is about our way of life," Williams told the crowd. "It's about community. It's about opportunity. And now, with the Nationals, it's about our nation's capital, Washington, D.C."

Though Major League Baseball owners last week delayed a vote on whether to officially approve the move of the Montreal Expos to Washington, and despite the fact that District Council Chairwoman Linda W. Cropp also delayed a vote on a stadium financing package that must be approved for the franchise to relocate, Williams joined Nationals President Tony Tavares and General Manager Jim Bowden in triumphantly making the announcement.

Stadium deal? What's wrong with RFK, aside from the fact that it's in a neighborhood that makes Fallujah look like a gated community?

"The gathering was preceded by a brief protest of the deal Williams brokered with MLB to bring baseball to Washington. District resident Adam Eidinger, 31, stormed to the podium on stage and yelled, "This is a bad deal, people," before the microphone was turned off. Eidinger remained on-stage yelling before several officials -- including District Councilman Harold Brazil (D-At Large) -- wrestled him off-stage. He was led to a back hall by security, where police spoke with him.

"I said free speech," Eidinger said after being escorted away from the event. "It's a half-baked deal, a rip off. They know it."

His other demand: make the name of the team the less-jingoistic "Multi-nationals".

I hope they play the Nats, but with Frank managing and Cal in the front office they may not seem that strange to you. Looking forward to a 15 minute subway ride to the game instead of the horror of I-95 but I'll sure miss the brisket at Attmans. Let the games begin.

They should have gone back with the Senators and not caved in to Mayor Williams and the rest of that crowd.

"Nationals" are what we used to call the migrant farm workers from Mexico. Then we called them "Braceros". I personally think the name "Nationals" is stupid for a team. If they want to reflect on the city, they should name them the "Leeches".

Here's an idea: let's call them the "Crack Whores" in honor of Marion Berry.

So, you the Orioles to win and earn more $$$$ for Peter Angelos. You better change your first name from "Angry" to "Mad."

Never said I liked Angelos. I'm just an Orioles fan.

BTW, my screen name is staying the same.

They could have called them the Federales...as in "The Ballad of Pancho and Lefty" ("...all the federales say, we could've had him any day...").
