Europe - Thy Name is Cowardice
Die Welt ^ | November 20, 2004 | Matthias Döpfner

Posted on 11/22/2004 5:30:51 PM PST by quidnunc

Matthias Döpfner, Chief Executive of German publisher Axel Springer AG, has written a blistering attack in the daily WELT against the cowardice of Europe in the face of the Islamic threat. Hartmut Lau translated the article for us.

Europe – Thy Name is Cowardice

Commentary by Mathias Döpfner

A few days ago Henryk M. Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe – your family name is appeasement." It’s a phrase you can’t get out of your head because it’s so terribly true.

Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to agreements. Appeasement stabilized communism in the Soviet Union and East Germany in that part of Europe where inhuman, suppressive governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities. Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo and we Europeans debated and debated until the Americans came in and did our work for us. Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East, European appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians. Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore 300,000 victims of Saddam’s torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the self-righteousness of the peace-movement, to issue bad grades to George Bush. A particularly grotesque form of appeasement is reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic fundamentalists in Holland and elsewhere by suggesting that we should really have a Muslim holiday in Germany.

Finally? A sane voice in the midst of capitulation, mediocrity and greed that had swallowed europe for the entire twentieth century? Could this be a sign of reason, or will this too, be snuffed out as Theo Van Gogh?

quidnunc, you are like the "poster of record", all high quality stuff. Thank goodness if they are growing brains over there, but heaven knows what they will actually DO about this stuff.

We think we got it bad here with our immigrant horde, hey, at least most of them don't want to destroy our entire CIVILIZATION, since they share it.

This is the choice: confrontation or capitulation. Appeasement is capitulation.

"Bush, supported only by the social democrat Blair acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic fight against democracy."

"For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy—because everything is at stake."

And this is why the American people re-elected him in a landslide victory and why Europeans and everyone else in the Free World should give them wholehearted support!

More and more Europeans will be speaking out against the muslims and the Liberal Socialist Governments that FORCES tolarance of the actions of the Muslims.

These Governments have accepted the Kerry Nusance Philosophy for the murders of their citizens!! I wonder how the Dems are accepting this philosophy now that they see it at work?

This is how one astute person described the people of Europe:

"The European masses are a bunch of emasculated, feckless drones who think they are more sophisticated than conservative Americans. In fact, they are a people who are quickly going the way of the dodo."

I can't believe that the Germans actually allowed this piece to be published--they restrict free speech, you know. To a German liberal, this is "hate speech".

The writer, himself, reveals his own tragic materialism when he writes:
"For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy—because everything is at stake."

The most significant "asset" that our brave President has risked is the life-blood of our sons and daughters. This is worth more that all the dollars in the world. Truly, EVERYthing is at stake.

"Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo and we Europeans debated and debated until the Americans came in and did our work for us. "

This is why they hate President George Bush and America.
Billyboy's feckless weaselling in the Balkans afforded them the figleaf of NATO multilateralism without actually expecting them to do anything(except, as always, the Brits).

George Bush made them look at themselves by challenging them to take multilateralism seriously. They were too cowardly to do it, and they hate him for exposing them as hypocrites, frauds, and moral cowards. (Clinton spared them this exposure because in this he was one of them.)
