Veteran "60 Minutes" commentator Andy Rooney blamed political bias at CBS, and the fact the news business has been taken over by people he called "moneychangers," for the network's decision to air forged documents on President Bush's National Guard service in September.
"I am very critical of some of the people at CBS who make it apparent what their political leanings are," Rooney said in a speech to Tufts University last week, in quotes picked up by RatherBiased.com.
"That's what happened to this thing of Dan Rather's that got out," he explained. "There's no question they wanted to run it because it was negative towards Bush." In the next breath Rooney complained that TV journalism "has been taken over" by "the moneychangers."
"I feel bad about the news business," Rooney said. "It has the prospects of being stronger than ever. There are good young people in the news business."
The CBS star said he was chagrined over reports that religious values played such a critical role in this year's election.
"I am an atheist," Rooney told Tufts. "I don't understand religion at all. I'm sure I'll offend a lot of people by saying this, but I think it's all nonsense."
He accused Christian fundamentalists of being ignorant, saying Christians turned to religion because of "a lack of education."
"They haven't been exposed to what the world has to offer," he explained.
Rooney also admitted to being mystified over how "men who work with their hands voted for George Bush."
"The labor force is conservative," he said. "How in the world did that happen?"

I'm not following the 'money-changers' reference. I'd like to see what context he used that in.
some people are better off retired , to go off and quietly live on their comfortable rural property , and let new voices come to the forefront. Andy is one such individual.

Rooney doesn't do news, He does opinion/commentary. It's not his job to be balanced and hide his leanings.
Rather does the news. There's more responsibility there.
I wonder what his excuse is? He should read the Bible though -- that way he could find his solution to the "moneychangers." (He would also find out what the term means.) I can't wait to see Andy, whip in hand, going through the CBS offices and driving them from their cubicles.
Andy Rooney can't help but be annoyed by the Christianity of uneducated morons like William F. Buckley, Antonin Scalia and Roger Kimball.

His entire comments seem to be an incoherent flow of drool.

I'm with you. The decision to run the "fake but accurate" memo story had nothing to do with money and everything to do with politics.
Andy's opinions are obvious (if annoying), but they're not presented as objective news. I see your point.
Fair enough. Most religios people probably think Rooney is nonsense too. What a bitter, angry little man.

As a Christian, neither do I Andy. I guess there are some things we just can't comprehend in this life - but God is both just and merciful.

How about the workers with ties to the military--were they gonna vote for Kerry? Or how about anyone concerned about the government taxing our hard workers even more?

If you want to know what a liberal is really like, just substitute "Muslim" or "Islamic" every time they say Christian -- then imagine what would happen if they said that.
Another "intellectual elitist" who is (in his mind) so far above the common man, that he can't comprehend them.
Well, I've got news for you Andy: there are a lot of critical thinkers who are conservative!
