A 16-year-old California girl suffered second degree burns Thursday when her cell phone caught fire in her back pocket, according to the Ontario Fire Department.

Ugh. Ok. Caveat emptor if you buy non-OEM batteries. If you have an LG, buy the bloody LG battery! Etcettera et al nauseum.

I've thrown dead flashlight batteries into a fire trying to get them to explode and it never happened.
Not being a chemist, I have no idea the make-up of ni-cad, lithium ion or nickel metel hydryde (?), but I'm willing to bet a catalyst of some sort is needed other than just laying there.

I'll look around for an old ni-cad cell battery and start the woodburner.
