Not only is SS a slush fund, but it is an income redistribution scheme to transfer money from Black men to White women.

Think about it.

Right-on.
It was the LBJ administration which caused SS to be included
into the general fund and the Clinton administration which
proposed that SS benefits be taxed.

and the Clinton administration which proposed that SS benefits be taxed.

Not true. Clinton raised the tax on benefits. They were already taxed.

The socalled privitization is just like the federal TSP program. Go to www.tsp.gov and you will see what he's proposing. As a federal employee myself, its a great way to prepare for retirement with a good return on my investment.

Amazing how it's the greatest thing since breathable air for federal employees (as an employer of 500, I pay **twice**) but it's not good enough for the rest of the poor American schlubs that have to pay for it. (recalling that all federal employees are funded by MY tax dollars...)

I wasn't addressing you directly. I was responding to the msg by the Maven.org. Yes, their msg is full of crap!

It is a shame we have gotten accustomed to the income expected in the retirement years instead of making it mandatory that citizen put aside a percentage for saving for retirement age. Without violating the Constitutional rights.

Bush's plan is not perfect but it is better than nothing and provide a starting point for doing something in a concrete matter.

My mistake. It would really be nice if we could get SS on solid ground and the national finances in order. We as a Nation would be MUCH better off...

I only hope they will allow some of us over the 20 something to opt in.

This is a fight we can win if we all work together – young workers, college students, baby boomers AND seniors. Why should young workers support continuing a system that gives them the distinct ability to live a life in their Golden Years below the poverty level. I see the way people on SS live every day and it stinks. Give me 1/3rd of my Social Security Money along with my other retirement savings and I'll be fine.

When I started working as a civilian after NAM my wife and I decided to match 1/4 of the amount taken out of our paychecks and start an investment progam. Over the last 45 yr's we have done very well and don't have to count on social security to keep beans on the table.

Did anyone check out just who these people are?

Ann Beaudry - People for the American Way

Mary Frances Berry - US Commission on Civil Rights

Julian Bond - NAACP Board Chair

Barbara Ehrenreich - Writer

Tom Hayden - California Legislature

Denis Hayes - Earth Day founder

Patricia Ireland - National Organization for Women

Jesse L. Jackson - Rainbow Coalition

Thea Lee - AFL-CIO, Assistant Director of Public Policy

Michael McCloskey - Environmentalist

Miles Rapoport - Democracy Works, Former Connecticut SoS

Plus about 90 other people who have "university of..." or "... union" after their names. Yet another socialist party roster in 527 form.

The socialist/demonrat/lieberals want to oppose this so they'll still have a major election time power chip to demagogue.

That should make Dems feel better. Thanks for the finer
point but if Democrats can claim that a cut in funding is
defined by a reduction within an increase then I don't think
it is too much of a leap to be less than precise when it
comes to Clinton and SS taxes.

Democrats to America: please oppose any reforms to inefficient and outdated govt programs that will permit Americans to acquire wealth and break away from govt dependency!

They will oppose any law that cuts guaranteed benefits, increases the retirement age, and/or ads(sic) debt onto the backs of young people and future generations.

What do they think the current SS situation does? The "debt onto the backs of young people and future generations" will be crippling if left as things are now.

If I remember my history right, what got Social Security into trouble was the expansion of the program without paying for it.

It was a financial assistance program in the beginning, not intended to be the sole source pf income. The Congress kept expanding the program to include just about everybody, and tried to make it the sole source of support.

Do I have this right?

Are you aware the Medicare and the Social Security programs account for more than 73% of the National Budget?
