Help Stop Bush's #1 Domestic Priority (BARF ALERT!)
Campaign For America's Future ^ | November 23, 2004 | Roger Hickey

Posted on 11/23/2004 5:26:08 PM PST by Former Dodger

(From a mailing I received)

I want to ask for your help today to defeat George Bush’s # 1 post-election priority: his plan to privatize Social Security. This is a fight we can win if we all work together – young workers, college students, baby boomers AND seniors. The president’s Wall Street cronies have amassed a war chest to sell this terrible idea to Congress. It’s time for us to step up – and tell our representatives to oppose it.

The Bush privatization plan would gut Social Security benefits for all Americans – especially younger people. It would make us all less secure in old age – while guaranteeing a windfall to Wall Street.

The time is now for voters to tell our Members of Congress: “Don’t you dare privatize Social Security!” Without a massive outpouring from Americans, there’s a real danger that just enough representatives in Washington – including some Democrats – will cave in early and vote with the special interests to privatize Social Security, like they voted for Bush’s ridiculous tax breaks for millionaires.

If you act now, you can stop the Bush plan. Please click on the link below, to put your Member of Congress on notice:

http://www.ourfuture.org/protect_soc_security.cfm

The Bush plan is simple – he wants to funnel our Social Security dollars through Wall Street financial houses so that they can make billions. Of course, someone has to pay for these profits, and in George Bush’s America that means us. Benefit cuts for just about everyone paying Social Security taxes, a higher retirement age, and trillions in new debt that young Americans will have to pay.

Your faxes this week will be the first volley in the campaign to defend Social Security from the corporate lobbyists who want to cash in. Please go to the link below to take action today and put your Member of Congress on notice: Say no to Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security.

http://www.ourfuture.org/protect_soc_security.cfm

The media report that corporate lobbyists plan to spend millions to push the Bush privatization plan. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that Bush’s plan would mean a benefit cut of 23% for today’s 34-year old worker when he or she retires. A 24-year old worker today would see cuts of 30%, and a child born today (2004) would at retirement have a Social Security benefit 45% smaller than the law now provides. In short – America’s young people will pay the price for this Bush payback to Wall Street.

Demand your Member of Congress promise you that:

They will oppose privatizing Social Security in any way.

They will oppose any law that funnels Social Security dollars through Wall Street.

They will oppose any law that cuts guaranteed benefits, increases the retirement age, and/or ads debt onto the backs of young people and future generations.

http://www.ourfuture.org/protect_soc_security.cfm

Most Americans strongly disagree with what President Bush wants to do to Social Security. In just the first 10 years, privatization would add $2 trillion to the national debt on top of the cost of the Bush tax breaks for millionaires. That’s $2 trillion that could be used to strengthen the Social Security trust fund.

The fight to save Social Security is a battle for the values America stands for. At a time when most younger workers have no pensions, Social Security needs to strengthened, not dismantled. George Bush’s vision for America would take us back to a time when our nation did not look after our seniors, where families had to sacrifice college tuition for their kids in order to care for their parents.

George Bush has no mandate, but he is being helped by powerful allies. Together, we can stop them. Please fax your Member of Congress today.

Sincerely,

Roger Hickey, Co-Director

I was just talking to a college friend of my daughter's. He opined that he couldn't understand how anybody could have voted for Bush. I told him I voted for Bush and I told him one reason why, explaining what a shell game pyramid scheme Social Security is, and how he'll be paying for it out of his mounting payroll taxes unless something's done now. Bush will do it, Kerry won't.

That kid became very thoughtful all of a sudden.

The whole SS is a massive "general fund" ruse anyway. More Munchhausen by Liberal. They'll never talk about Argentina which privatized their national (SS) retirement system 10 years ago - which has been a tremendous success. There is no US SSTF - just one giant IOU which will end in outright bankruptcy.

I don't know how anyone could object to privatizing a portion of Social Security. It just defies rational explanation.

Privatization will encourage folks to start a savings plan. When that savings plan starts to take off, it will encourage further savings. People will find it easier to retire earlier with better lasting incomes.

Within twenty years, I'd like to see 50% of S.S. withholding allowed to be saved by the citizens discression, within guidelines. By the end of 40 years, I'd like to see S.S. completely privatized, within guidelines.

Sure sounds like this is a preelection letter or a very serious case of denial. I prefer the latter as it brings more smiles to my face.

Question for Mr. Hickey: Where do you have your retirement funds invested?

If nothing is done to help Social Security, it will go broke in a few years!

Any opposition to the plan or plans won't help! You got any better idea?

Social Security trust fund.

This person is seriously delusional about the nature and function of SS.

SS has always been a wealth redistribution program transferring monies from the working poor and middle class to politicians and bureaucrats to redistribute as they see fit. Trust fund, ha! No, it's a slush fund.

You know, you too can go online and send the letter. You can also change it! It's true!:

President Bush is claiming a mandate to privatize Social Security. I’m writing to tell you that it's a great idea.

I am writing to ask where you stand, and to ask you to declare yourself united with President Bush.

I would like you to write me back immediately to answer the following crucial questions:

1)Do you really read this carp?

2)Will you move that fire hydrant in front of my house?

3)Where in the heck are my car keys?

Make up a name if you must... I was Professor Lilloman from the Psychoneurotic Institute for the Very, VERY Nervous.

How can young people feel any less secure. Shoot, 90 percent of young people don't believe social security will be around when they retire.

You missed my point. Yes, something definitely needs to be done with SS. The dimmos use it as fearmongering against people who could better invest it for themselves. I was in strong agreement with the posters assessment that the fearmongering in the text of the article is, in fact, nausea producing. I do not expect SS in its current form to provide me with much, if any, retirement funds. No, I'm sorry I don't have a plan. I'm in the healthcare business not the financial business.

The president’s Wall Street cronies have amassed a war chest to sell this terrible idea to Congress. It’s time for us to step up – and tell our representatives to oppose it.

Ask the people in Galveston Texas if it is a "terrible idea."

The Bush privatization plan would gut Social Security benefits for all Americans – especially younger people.

100% TRUE! But instead of getting a pittance every month in SS money, people will be getting checks on average LARGER than the checks they got on payday.

The Bush plan is simple – he wants to funnel our Social Security dollars through Wall Street financial houses so that they can make billions. Of course, someone has to pay for these profits, and in George Bush’s America that means us.

I have never seen a study on this or any numbers on it at all. But I am sure I am safe in saying that the "fees" charged by 'Wall Street' to manage and administer the accounts is LESS than the current administrative costs of SS. Which 'we pay for'.

a higher retirement age

Actually the retirement age could be lowered as the benefits would be paid by a hard asset, not by a pay as you go system with a dwindling number of workers per beneficiary.

a child born today (2004) would at retirement have a Social Security benefit 45% smaller than the law now provides.

Yes, a reduction in SS benes would happen. But a retirement benefit far exceeding SS would be owned by the individual. And there is NO LAW, none, zero, not a single one that says what amount of SS benefits people are to receive and further, there is NO LAW saying the government has to pay you a dime in SS benefits and the Supreme Court has even ruled so.

They will oppose any law that cuts guaranteed benefits

First there would have to be a law that guaranteed benefits. There isn't one.
