I agree that the individual is culpable. However, he would not have resorted to this kind of thing had the bishop simply done his job and enforced canon 916 and barred the Rainbow Sash people from communnion.

Perhaps, but I doubt it. Flagrant episcopal complicity in sacriledge is such an enormous outrage, I can see how it can drive otherwise stable people into doing stupid things.

They're protest a bit too much about the damage, it seems to me. A little oil stained the concrete outside the Cathedral. Real damage to be sure, but it seems pretty minor to me.
