Somewhat like the ancient Greeks who did not understand mental illness (brain disfunctions)either, the arabs believed sufferers were 'touched by the gods and destined for greatness' therefor it was predicted, from an early age, mohammad would 'do great deeds'. It is documented from arabic sources that mohammad was treated with aromatherapy and kept in a dark room, covered with wet cloths when he suffered from fits.
Sources also allude to numerous schizoid episodes. He himself was afraid of the voices he heard in his head...his own followers described him as jinn possessed.

He was just describing that animal and it's alleged work of fiction. Epilepsy was just part of the description in addition to evil.
