Long-awaited meeting between Kuchma and Yushchenko underway in Kyiv

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) - Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko sat down Friday for round-table talks in the presence of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

The long-awaited talks came after six days of massive street protests in the Ukrainian capital against alleged election fraud, which the opposition says robbed its candidate of victory in Sunday's presidential run-off. The West also criticized the vote as marred by fraud.

The envoys arrived in Kyiv in an effort to help solve the political crisis which has threatened to erupt into violence. Kuchma's government certified Yanukovych as the winner, but western-leaning Yushchenko claims he was robbed of victory.

The meeting was expected to also include European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, Boris Gryzlov, speaker of Russia's lower house of parliament, and Jan Kubis, the current head of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

History will show that it is fairly easy to take a people hostage and enslave them for decades. But it will also show that once set free it will be very hard to reenslave them or their children. If Kuchma threatens Yushchenko with dire warnings of Putin and Russian involvment, Yushchenko is likely to warn back that Putin would not be able to control 50 million Cossacks.

Actually it was reported that Yanukovych today told his followers that to him the post of President was not worth the life of a single Ukranian, and that he would consider standing back if it came to violence.

No such words have been heard from Mr Yushchenko.

Goes to show you who is more interested in the welfare of the Ukrainian people, than his own power, and who has his priorities in the reverse order.

People are so naive, they don't understand that with all the rhetoric, Yushchenko is only interested in power. He is Soros' puppet.

No such words have been heard from Mr Yushchenko.

I noted the differences in responses as well. Thanks for pointing them out.

There's a subtle PC mentality that has swept this country which values public order higher than principles of law.

Many Ukrainian patriots among the reformers are appalled by Soros' ego-driven meddling and have openly condemned him.
Far more worthy of note is the fact that virtually every major Ukrainian expatriates' organization, including the World Ukrainian Congress, stands firmly behind Yushchenko and the reform movement.

Personally, I'm getting tired of all of this whining about Soros and really starting to wonder as to its true motivation.

If a few Nazis, for their own self-serving reasons, were found to have supported President Bush's re-election would this mean that he - or the over 61 million patriots who voted for him - agreed with their goals or ideology?

Sheesh!!!

Slava Ukraini!

All the Cossacks I ever met were Russian, not Ukrainian. Also, "Ukraine" is nor a nation filled with "Ukrainians, less than half are separatist nationalists.

Maybe the Ukrainian Cossacks have been avoiding you for some reason?

They are the differences between a man who has history and right on his side, and a man who knows he has been caught in the commission of a crime.

In any case, Yanukovich is a bit-player. The real powers behind his candidacy (Kuchma and Putin) are the ones to watch.

less than half are separatist nationalists.

Now that is some excellent parsing, my friend! Any Ukrainian who doesn't consider himself to be a part of Mother Russia is now a "separatist?"

Most people would say it's the other way around. LOL.

you know damn well that yanukovych was supported by putinto the tune of 300 million. apperantly that is totally ok, the support of a foreign nation in ukraine's politics?

yanukovych is russias puppet.

explain to me how a few million to yushchenko makes him a puppet and several hundred million to yanukovych makes him a hero?

The so-called Soros connection is a canard. These people are using it to distract conservatives (who rightly distrust and/or despite Soros) from the real issue.

The good news is that their ruse is not working. Most conservatives remember the Cold War and do not relish the idea of reconstituting our old enemy.
