RATHER THAN RIGHT

Dan Rather, who has announced his "retirement" next March from the anchor desk he has held for 24 years, is a dinosaur. After the last old news anchor leaves (Peter Jennings will be the final one sitting), Mr. Rather, Tom Brokaw and Mr. Jennings will be fossils. There will not be their like again.

It doesn't matter who replaces Mr. Rather. Everyone at that level of broadcast journalism has been ideologically vetted. No conservative is allowed to ascend to the top of major news organizations. If you disagree, try naming one.

CBS management is clueless. After Rather made his announcement, CBS should have filled Rather's shoes IMMEDIATELY. Betcha CBS ratings go down further. The CEO of CBS should be fired.

Why does he get more than two week's notice?

Why not John Stewart? CBS is a liberal joke already.

Here's a wild prognostication...

1) CBS broadcast news continues to decline in ratings and revenues.
2) The CSI franchise inevitably fades and network profits go into the toilet.
3) Corporate types at Viacom get fed up with the hemmoraging in the news division and decide to ax the whole lot.
3) CBS shuts down it's news division and outsources the whole thing to CNN through acquisition.

-- alternate outcome --
3) Viacom sells CBS lock, stock, 'n barrel to Time-Warner which proceeds to "merge" the news divisions and eliminate 50% of the jobs.

Very nice prognosticating, Mr. Dung. Except that you forgot the part about how either of your alternate outcomes would be accompanied by thousands of hours of kvetching by the hot-air machines on CNNMSNBCCNBCABCNBCPBS about what the loss of CBS would mean to the imperitive of diverrrsity, and the chilling effeeect that might result in "newsrooms" all across our troubled land.

"A great and powerful voice has been stilled!" they will say, and their heads will hang low between their shoulders as they hunch around their set-piece conference tables. Their brows will furrow with lines of concern.

Then they'll all break for a post-rap snack at "21" before hopping into their limos for the ride home. Another day of being concerned will be done, and the best part is... there's always tomorrow.

Too bad about Rather, though.

I certainly wouldn't disagree with you...the sack cloth and ashes would be ample. My faith, however, is in the power of the dollar and the limits that every shareholder has to backing an idealogical battle that don't generate no green.

Ain't capitalism beautiful!

Mohammad Reza Shah's gift to President Jimmy Carter: A portrait of George Washington surrounded with Persian designs.

Jimmy Carter's gift to the Shah. Loss of Persia to the Mullahs

The Mullahs ONLY came into power because the Peacock Shah
refused yet another campaign donation to the DNC or Carter.

For his refusal, Carter pulled the plug and in came Kerry's supporters, the Mullahs.

Pres. Carter's illegal financial demands made upon the Shah of Iran
immediately before Iranian terror takeover
