Well, Cauchy did first (or did Bolzano) use e and d to represent the relevant variables. Cauchy did use infintesimals but they were unnecessary even in his formulation. Weirstrass did fix it up much better with out infintesimals as you pointed out.

Richard Hamming was always complaining about this method of looking at things. I couldn't ever get him to give a better one though.
