You don't know what you think you know. First, it's Lawrence, not Laurence. And Lawrence is much worse than Lowell, which benefitted mightily from the fact that Paul Tsongas hailed from Lowell and brought home enough bacon to shine up the old place. Lowell was also the home of the headquarters of Wang which had some very good years. These two things, happening simultaneously, boosted Lowell into a type of restoration that Lawrence never saw. Lawrence is magnitudes worse.

Speaking of Lowell, the following comes from the website of Congressman Martin T(aliban) Meehan...who, days before
the election, had visions of becoming Senator in the special election necessitated by the election of
President Kerry. Only...it was...not to be. Here are words
of wisdom (YUCK) from the Man Who Would Be Senator:

Congressman "ME"-han writes:
"Years from now, I believe we will look back on 2004 as the year that Democrats began to find their faith again. Starting with Howard Dean’s passionate primary campaign and culminating with an unprecedented get-out-the-vote operation that mobilized 56 million people to vote for John Kerry, the Democratic Party was rebuilt from the ground up. Millions of people who were previously disengaged from the political process registered to vote, volunteered, blogged, contributed, and cast ballots.

"George Bush’s 51-48 victory is neither a mandate for him nor a death knell for the Democrats.

"It is not a mandate because most Americans voted to reelect President Bush despite of, and not because of, his record and his positions on most issues.

"56 million Americans voted to remove this President from office and millions more voted for him despite holding profound concerns about his policies toward the economy and the war in Iraq. Fewer than half of Americans approve of President Bush’s job performance and a majority believes that the country is going in the wrong direction. President Bush won because his personal appeal and communications skills outweighed his dismal record and wrongheaded ideas about the country’s future..."

(AARRRGH! MAKE IT STOP PLEASE!)
