The problem with what West did is that it became public. Normally, the Army would have looked the other way on this if it could have. But because someone ratted him out, the Army had to do something because what he did was a technical violation of the Law of War to which our military is supposed to be bound.
The writer is overreacting.

At that point, the Army had to act to keep the chain of command intact--nothing causes problems for morale faster than "do as I say, not as I do."

Atkinson is an intelligent man who carries a deep seated rage within him for things that happened to the Naval Aviator community , himself included, during the Clinton era.
