A little update here for any fellow freepers in Virginia. Next year will be the govenor's race. The current govenor, Mark Warner (D), will not be able to run due to state law that prevents any govenor from serving two consecutive terms in Virginia. And I heard it on the radio that early expectations are that current Attorney General Jerry Kilgore will most likely be the Republican Candidate. And he will probably be running against the current Lt. Gov Tim Kaine. Don't know much about either of these guys.
How about Kilgore Trout instead??
What are our chances?
Republican Kilgore should be favored.
But isn't he ... gasp ... "religious right?"
Does either have official websites yet?..
That does sound like the logical match-up.
Kaine is the former mayor of Richmond and Kilgore was Public Safety Director in the Gilmore Administration.
Visit the state GOP's web site and you can see them already starting to take aim at Kaine:

Should be an interesting off-year race to watch...
Here is Jerry Kilgore's

Here is Tim Kaine's

Kilgore will win this one...
Kilgore does...but it's pretty sparse right now.

Kaine doesn't have one yet. But here's his Lt Gov site:

Kaine was mayor of Richmond when I lived there. The guy is an empty suit - there's no there there. But he is slick - Kilgore should not underestimate this guy.
Richmond ping.
Anyone care to weigh on this?
Jerry Kilgore will be the Republican Nominee. He is a conservative, law and order, limited government Christian.
At this point he is favored to win. A lot of that is that he has higher name recognition. However, he was the top vote getter in 2001, receiving more votes than the carpetbagger Governor.
He has named his campaign team this week. They are some of the best in the business. He will officially file just after the first of the year and will likely resign as Attorney General to campaign full time once he makes an officially announcement.

Kaine will have to defend his record in the city of Richmond - highest per capita murder rate in the country; high taxes; corruption at all levels of city government (about 15 people are in jail because of convictions on various charges); poor school performance; yada, yada, yada.
Kilgore should run on reducing taxes - the $1.5B tax increase pushed through last session of the general assembly has resulted in a $1B budget surplus (can you say "overtaxation"? I knew you could.)
AG Kilgore has been good for the CCW community.
I've found Kilgore to be lone voice of sanity in this hacko world of Virginia politics. That said, he's got to work on that voice of his or get himself a teaching gig at the New York School of the Deaf.
Is it me or does Kaine seem like the junior varsity version of John Edwards?
He's been doing a lot since he's been AG. However, it is late in the day, I'm tired and unfortunately, can't list anything specific. I'm thinking things like domestic violence programs, the anti-gang initiatives and the like. I think his resume is pretty strong.
I know that most VA AGs have run for Governor recently... do they usually resign the final year of their term?
What a great line! The JV version of John Edwards - I like it!
