So do I. He has already exceeded President Reagans record in defending life and he has gone where even RR didn't dare, the heart of the beast in the ME. Of course, President Reagan had the bear on his plate so he can be excused for that but he can't be excused for not responding more forcefully in Lebanon.
Every time I think of Lebanon, I say a prayer for those Marines who were murdered. God rest their souls.
He was dealing with a uncooperative Congress as well as the bear. So I try to look past it. President Bush's response is much more to my liking but he has advantages that President Reagan did not. Best of all, he uses those advantages quite well.
There is also a different mind set in the US today then there was then. Back then very few besides President Reagan believed that the West would win. Most believed we would lose. A smaller number believed we could contain. But almost none believed we would win.
This is one of the things that has produced a split in conservative thought, the side that believes that we can and will win has grown and most of them are the younger conservatives. Those who want to retreat back to the contain positions now have a fight on their hands.
