Bing Crosby, Heston, James Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelley, Bob Hope... Bing Crosby had a terrible home life and I believe one of his sons committed suicide. Grace Kelly????? Apparently, she slept with EVERYONE. The PR machine was very good at keeping things under wraps back then.

Selma Hayek (If I were a man I'd be stalking her).

Go ahead, she probably won't mind.(deep sarcasm) I remember when we seldom questioned the sexual preference of the pop world, unless the grey areas were included in their persona, a la Liberace. The outing of Rock Hudson was a big surprise to so many just be cause of that reason.

My parent's generation was attacked by Stalin and Castro.
It was not represented by them.

Bing did not have a terrible home life. He had a son who was a druggie and claimed Bing was abusive, etc. But everyone else, inclusing other of his children, dispute that. He was a gentleman thru & thru.

the premise of this thread ... was kind of stupid

Thanks ever so much.

I don't look to Hollywood (any generation) for my saints.

My premise was simply to compare a generation which spewed it's lurid personal
behavior into the public eye versus a generation which did not.

Well stated.

Yes, I think Bing got a bad rap. His kids from his 2nd marriage, seem to have ended up OK & had a good relationship with him.

As for Grace, compared to what goes on today, her sins seem pretty minor.

I Dream of Jeannie was a dreadful program, but BE made having to watch the show tolerable. Back in the days of one TV in the house we usually watched what kids wanted to see.

Barbara was in a movie with Elvis while in the filming it was said that backstage the he tried to get with her and she told him to back off. Because of that, they was said to remained close friends rather than a flash in the pan.

Here's a very interesting site about Bing: CLICK HERE

and here's an excerpt from that site:

Six years after Bing died, Bing’s son Gary wrote the book Going my own Way. It shocked the world. Gary detailed the years of physical and emotional abuse from his father, from his nickname of "Bucket Butt", weekly weigh-ins, and beatings that drew blood. Gary said in his book that to endure the pain, he would dream up ways to kill his father. Gary’s brother Lindsay supported the charges in the book, stating, "I hope it clears up a lot of the old lies." Bing’s second family was outraged at the book, but Gary said he wanted the truth to be told. It was a completely different view of Father O’Malley. It is a great book, if you are able to find a copy. I do not intend to disrespect Bing’s memory, but I am going by what the book said. (Very kind of you Kevin, but I will. Bing was a nasty, mean man. There, I said it.) Bing left money for all of his children, with a catch. It was left in a blind trust, until they turned 65. Reminds me of an old joke. How do you know Bing Crosby was uncircumcised? There was just no end to that prick.

Gary Crosby died of lung cancer at 62, on August 24th, 1995. Dennis and Lindsay both died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, Lindsay in 1989, and Dennis in 1991. Phillip is a nightclub owner, living in Woodland Hills now, and vehemently denies that Bing was a bad man.

My point was that it was not the people, it was the culture.

Yep, that was his son's claims. There has also been several pointed de-bunkings, which I shall e-mail to you when I did 'em up.

Also, a lot of people in Hollywood in the 40's and 50's were communists and/or had weird private lives. We just didn't know about it or they and the studio's kept in hidden.

I know what's been said. But there's no disputing that his first family was a tortured family (and I don't mean physically) to say the least. Second families, when the man is older, are usually a bit more settled. But I was very surprised to learn about the blind trusts. That's cruel in and of itself to deny your children anything until if or when they reach the age of 65. That is mean. I dare you to defend it.

Can't touch it until they're 65?

There is one defense: Most Americans have no significant savings. 70% are living paycheck to paycheck. In upscale neighborhoods, its' about 80%.

Most people use their credit cards to get what they want NOW, on the expectation that they'll be able to pay it off later. But life happens, the transmission goes out, etc. "Later" never comes-- the debt just snowballs. (Yes, I'm a Dave Ramsey fan:).

Therefore, ensuring your children have something to live on when they're old and not producing income might have been the kindest thing ole Bing could do.

Or maybe it was just spite. Who knows?
