Those are the gross figures. We're talking less that 29,000 mixed marriages a year in a country of 126,550,000. This is not exactly a tsunami of cultural change...
Not only are the total number of "mixed marriages" insignificant, but more Japanese men are marrying foreigners than Japanese women marrying foreigners. So, exactly what is the trend? One could easily conclude that Japanese men are seeking wives with traditional values and find other Asian females more likely have the values they are seeking.
Additionally, the actual number of Japanese women marrying Westerners is but a fraction of those marrying Koreans and Chinese men. It seems they actually prefer some of the traditional Asian values rather than so-called Western values.
