"But it is because we are not willing to put the men where they should be, and that is taking up the responsibility."

While I think its nice that she acknowledges that abortion is wrong, I think she misses the point that the women need to take responsibility for their actions, after all, they ARE the ones that will carry the baby till birth. There are two people that need to take responsibility, but I think the woman must take 51% of the responsibility. (at least)

As a side note, its probably a good thing that she made her statement after winning.

She's made some wacky statements about AIDS, so she's redeemed herself a bit with this.

Well, it took two to conceive. So, unless she raped him, he should bear his part of the responsibility.

I completely agree. But re-read the original quotation:

"When we allow abortion, we are punishing the women -- who must abort their children because their men have run away -- and we are punishing the children whose life is terminated," she continued. "But it is because we are not willing to put the men where they should be, and that is taking up the responsibility."

I'm not in Kenya -- maybe this flies there -- but I'd argue to the contrary here in the USA. There are definitely dead-beats among men to be sure. But to paint women as "the victims" in our country goes too far. Feminists have claimed the "right" for women to pursue abortion without the father's consent or knowledge. I see men fighting for child custody regularly. There is legislation in process that even allows women who are minors to attain abortions without consulting their parents let alone their spouse/boyfriend. Men in the USA have been legally denied their rights as the perspective fathers by the feminist movement all in the name of preserving womens' freedom/liberation.

At this point I would be offended by a woman telling me the abortion problem is the man's fault. Women can either decide for themselves not to have sex and therefore not to get pregnant. Or they can decide for themselves not submit themselves to a the abortion clinic and therefore not to commit this heinous crime. Or (my preference) they can decide that 30 years of feminism has done more harm than good and start over with men fully part of the decision making process.

Really?

I wasn't aware of that?

Was it Thabo Mbeki-type "wacky", or just slightly heterodox?

The only real information that I was able to glean about this woman was that she is an environmentalist in Kenya and that all of the anti-Western, antiwar, anti-American nominees were pissed off that she beat them out for this prize.

You with her on this too?

Agreeing with someone on one topic does not necessarly mean that one agrees with them on everything else.
