I get incensed by hearing newsie-readers, pundits, commentators, politicians, etc., use the term tragedy when the action or event was an atrocity.
Tragedy implies that something bad happened but there really wasn't any way to prevent it. A tornado hitting a building and killing an occupant is a tragedy.
The barbarous murder of 2,700 innocent citizens by terrorists hijacking airplanes and intentionally using them as volatile missiles aimed at buildings is not a tragedy -- that is an atrocity.
