'Christmas' Returns to the Capitol (CA) (Schwarzenegger)
Sacramento Union ^ | Dec. 3, 2004 | Ryan Rose

Ending a five-year tradition started by his predecessor, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger brought the word “Christmas” back to Sacramento.

Known for breaking the mold, the Republican governor is calling the 56-foot white fir outside the Capitol a “Christmas tree.” Former Democratic Gov. Gray Davis had renamed the display a “Holiday tree” in 1999. Schwarzenegger said the Capitol would have a “Christmas tree” as long as he’s in office.

Sticking to his promise, Schwarzenegger frequently used the word “Christmas” during Thursday’s annual tree lighting ceremony.

And another article to go with it (with lots of sarcasm -- it's a good editorial, about how ridiculous it is the way schools and government offices ban Christmas):

Unhappily misguided holidays

Schwarzenegger is a (shudder) Catholic. His spokesman tells me, "Well, it is a Christmas tree. ...But somebody did ask us whether the governor misspoke. " Former Gov. Gray Davis had bowed to special-interest groups, dubbing the huge conifer a "holiday tree."

In recent years, various California schools have banned the hideous "Silent Night" (in Sacramento's San Juan School District), banned "Jingle Bells" because of offensive religiousness (in Fresno, where outraged parents quickly overturned the ban) and removed red-and-green lights that were seen as a "provocation" (in a Newport Beach school). One pundit questioned whether upscale Newport Beach should also take down traffic signals.

Schwarzenegger celebrates Hanukkah

Saying December is a time to "celebrate, celebrate, celebrate," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took part yeterday in a menorah lighting on the Capitol steps, just a week removed from his role in a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The ceremony was the 11th menorah lighting at the Capitol, sponsored by the Chabad of California. The governor lit the center light of the menorah, a symbol of freedom. Schwarzenegger also took part in ceremonial songs and the tradition of gift giving.

Interesting that this is just the 11th time there was a Menorah lighting at the CA Capitol. Arnold is bringing back Judeo Christian traditions to the CA government.

This alone made it worth getting rid of Gray Davis.

"This alone made it worth getting rid of Gray Davis."

That's exactly how I felt.

I didn't even know Davis banned Christmas from the CA Capitol.

If Arnold runs for re-election in '06, one can hope it will be a landslide victory. because the Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and Treasurer positions will be open races.

His coattails could give Republicans a slate of Republicans capable of winning state-wide offices and that includes Tom McClintock as California's next Lt. Governor.

Arnold's roots are showing. You know he came from a place that didn't allow a lot of the freedoms you and I take for granted. I think why I am so moved by this man is he really knows, appreciates, and practices his rights without apology to anybody. As we all should be able to do...

Merry Christmas Arnold and have a Blessed Yuletide Season.

Arnold does indeed know what freedom is!

A pity he can't run for president. I think he'd make a good one, despite being married to a Kennedy.

This is the best news I've heard all day. ACLU types really, really, really need to get a life. Teach Marxism in class, teach X-rated stuff in class, but don't you dare mention Christmas or you might traumatize someone. Yeesh.

To a Girlie Man, this is a Holiday Tree.

To a Real Man, it is a Christmas Tree.
