An Old-fashioned Slugfest
The Human Life Review ^ | 12-12--4 | William Murchison

All right, all right. Far from sticking his nose into the internal affairs of the Roman Catholic Church, an Episcopalian-the one talking at this moment-probably should undertake to keep lip tightly zipped. Much of the highly publicized stuff that prominent Anglicans dispense these days on matters theological and moral is, I confess, stunningly awful. I am particularly taken with the spacious viewpoint of one of our northeastern bishops, who, queried a few years ago regarding his commitment to scriptural authority, declared: "The church wrote the Bible. The church can rewrite it." The Bible as Weblog: you have to admit it's a striking concept.

But enough about us. What about the flowering of the debate this year in Roman Catholic circles concerning the imputed duty of elected Roman Catholics to support and protect, legislatively speaking, unborn life?

Have you visited the religion forum yet? It's a great place for articles of this nature.

Generally, the Kerries of this world are not (and cannot afford to be) Catholics or anything else from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, longer if the legislature is pulling a late session. So they are part timers only, per injunction against serving two masters AT THE SAME TIME.

Given Kerry's penchnant for seeking out rich widows, I'd say that's about right...

I decided a long while ago that if these various Senators can call themselves "Catholics" - Kerry, Kennedy, Daschle, Leahy et al. - then I ought to be able to call myself "Senator". Of course, it's more important to be a Catholic than to be a Senator, but being called "Senator" is fun, too! Everyone should do it!

What's more important [and to whom] is open to question: have you considered senatorial pay, perks, pension and health insurance? Besides, trying to impersonate a Senator might be a criminal offense, while impersonating a Catholic is not.

I hadn't given any thought to the salary, pension and other perks, but now you've got me thinking. Then there's the matter of impersonating a Senator. They probably do have it rigged so that impersonating a politician (read: criminal) is some kind of crime, but maybe there's a loophole. I mean, they let "The Colonel" keep selling fried chicken and all, right?
