It's for real. I have traveled to Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia and it was a serious problem in those countries over 14 years ago. At that time they estimated infection rates as high as 30%. Haven't been there in several years but I can't imagine the situation has gotten better.

In 2001, the last year for which data has been posted, the rate for some countries was as high as 38%.
