Disinformation is a risk to the Nation's credibility only when organizations other than the New York Times does it. We need look only at its election coverage, including the Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and lost Iraqi munitions stories, as a prime example. When the Times supplies content to the propagandists at work for our nation's enemies, it doesn't seem to count.

Why should the Main Street Media be the only ones allowed to use misinformation for their own agenda's? CBS' use of forged documents to manipulate a presidential election comes to mind as a prime example.

"The Pentagon is engaged in bitter, high-level debate over how far it can and should go in managing or manipulating information to influence opinion..."

At least it is debated in some places. Dont' look for any similar stories about the NYT editorial board.

Why shouldn't The Government lie to the public? It's for The Children.

Tell you what, let's do what we didn't do in Vietnam: Win the war first, then let the press argue about it later.

The Pentagon is engaged in bitter, high-level debate over how far it can and should go in managing or manipulating information to influence opinion abroad, senior Defense Department civilians and military officers say.

The NYT resolved this issue long ago.......First line was all I had to read...

The Gray Lady is jealous. A recent poll showed military officers are trusted and the media isn't.

First, we need to establish that we the People do not have a right to know what's going on operationally. Most Americans, Republican and Democrat, accept that and would not want our troops to be endangered just so we can receive more timely information.

Originally I thought the media just wanted to inflate their importance by continually pushing the envelope on disclosure. This war has led me to believe their motives are more malignant. They oppose this war because they oppose this President. They want to portray it as negatively as possible. They don't care if it makes us lose the war. They will use forgeries & sadistic pornography. They will propagate actual pornography. They will hype "missing explosives" as a threat without being able to establish that they're missing or ever been used against us. Now it's the 25% of the HumVees that aren't armored that are the root of all evil. Even though Congress dictates what weapons get built this is somehow the SecDef's fault.

Maybe since disinformation is all they produce, they're worried about the competition.

"Our job is to put out information to the public that is accurate,"

Why start now?
