He wanted Toby Keith?s "American Soldier" played at his funeral. His family would like that song played country-wide at 1pm EST on December 15th. All we have to do is get on the phone.

On December 15, 2004, at one EST, My Father in law will be buried. He was 89 years old,his decorations include, Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Stars, Legion of Merit, Bronze Stars, Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation. He was a veteran of WWII, Korean and Vietnam. It would please me, to hear the sounds of "American Solider" humming in the background somewhere, while my Father-in-Law, a retired colonel is laid to rest with a military funeral also.

I'm just trying to be a father,
Raise a daughter and a son,
Be a lover to their mother,
Everything to everyone.

Up and at 'em bright and early,
I'm all in my business suit,
Yeah, I'm dressed for success
from my head down to my boots,
I don't do it for money,
there's still bills that I can't pay,
I don't do it for the glory,
I just do it anyway,
Providing for our future's my responsibility

Yeah I'm real good under pressure,
being all that I can be,
And I can't call in sick on Mondays
when the weekends been too strong,
I just work straight through the holidays,
And sometimes all night long.

You can bet that I stand ready
when the wolf growls at the door,
Hey, I'm solid, hey I'm steady,
hey I'm true down to the core,
And I will always do my duty,
no matter what the price,
I've counted up the cost,
I know the sacrifice,

Oh, and I don't want to die for you,
But if dyin's asked of me,
I'll bear that cross with an honor,
'Cause freedom don't come free.

I'm an american soldier, an american,
Beside my brothers and my sisters
I will proudly take a stand,
When liberty's in jeopardy
I will always do what's right,
I'm out here on the front lines,
sleep in peace tonight.
American soldier, I'm an American,
An American,
An American Soldier.

Sp. Mahlenbrock indeed seems to have been one of a kind - according to Philly local TV, he was granted leave to return from Iraq a few months ago to spend two weeks with his newly-born daughter - his widow says he is the only father she ever heard of who took his week-old child to the zoo and "Chucky Cheese" among other places - he also videotaped sessions of himself reading to his daughter for her future viewing - almost sounds as though he had a premonition that he wasn't going to make it back - a tragic loss......

I called my local am talk station and gave the news desk the info. They are owned by a large media company who owns a bunch of stations. I told the news guy about the story and asked him to pass it on to the other stations in his group.

He was very interested.

I will make sure to listen to see if they played the song.

I will be calling KIX106 (WGKK) in Memphis

Request Line: (901) 535-9106

Have any others from the Memphis area already call them?

Did a Google on this young man's name. The story, with and without the request, is being widely covered, particularly in the New Jersey / Philadelphia area.

I have not read the whole thread yet, but has anyone tried contacting Toby Keith?

Done, KTPI in the Antelope Valley has rec'd my request, although I'm not a big country fan. Easy and honorable request to make.

RIP young man, you've earned it, may the good Lord watch over your family.

Note - forwarded via email to Country Music Television (CMT.COM).

Also, from the news stories about this, one of the groups helping to promote this, Soldiers' Angels, is trying to get Toby Keith to sing at the funeral.

Since I work right here, I'm gonna try to take an early lunch and slip away from work tomorrow to attend this young man's funeral.

Every one of these I've ever attended have just ripped my heart out.

The saddest thing for a Soldier is hearing Taps being played for another Soldier - but it's sobering and serves to reinforce the profound impact these brave warriors have on our lives back here.

We should all be glad we have troops who "get it" and are willing to put it all on the line so that we can go right on being whatever kind of American we choose.

It's just too bad we have so many in this country making such horribly selfish choices about the kind of "American" they choose to be.

This American Soldier will proudly represent Free Republic as Specialist David Mahlenbrock is laid to rest in our hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetary.
