Let's Stop Scaring Ourselves
Parade Magazine ^ | December 5, 2004 | Michael Crichton

This year I turned 62, and I find I have acquired—along with aches and pains—a perspective on the world that I lacked as a younger person. I now recognize that for most of my life I have felt burdened by highly publicized fears that decades later did not turn out to be true.

I was reminded of this when I came across this 1972 statement about climate: “We simply cannot afford to gamble…We cannot risk inaction. Those scientists who [disagree] are acting irresponsibly. The indications that our climate can soon change for the worse are too strong to be reasonably ignored.” This author wasn’t concerned about global warming. He was worried about global cooling and the coming ice age.

I distinctly remember reading a National Geographic article on alternative energy that stated unequivocally that world oil reserves would be used up by the year 2000. This was back in the late '70s or early '80s.

I read too much US News and World Report in my high school years. I don't read news magazines or newspapers anymore. News magazines (and newspapers) provide a very unbalanced, negative view of the world.

"We’re all going to freeze!"

Oh boy, I remember those days like it was yesterday.
One coworker (a young impressionable guy), bought about $2000 of Arctic Gear. I'm series!

He had about every Down Vest made, Wool Sweaters, Parkas, Arctic Boots, -500 Sleeping bags, etc. When he got to the office it took him about 15 minutes to get all his stuff off.

I'm worried sick about "global dumbing". I see evidence everywhere that the world is becoming dumber everyday. Look at the UN, the EU, the DNC. It is horrifying.

Apologies for the re-post. I did a search for "Crichton" and didn't get any hits.

You may think we can relax now, but we can't. We are being drained of our precious bodily essence. Do you know how it's happening Mandrake? Fluoride, that's how Mandrake, Fluoride....

Didn't Ted Danson predict that the oceans would be gone in ten years? I think it was in 1984 that he made this prediction.
He played an Alcoholic bartender on TV, so we should listen to him.

Searching by a word in the title is the surest method. If same content is published on the web under different titles, oh well.
