Even Hollywood liberals were left reeling after Chevy Chase's potty-mouthed Bush-bashing Tuesday night at the Kennedy Center, where the actor hosted an awards ceremony staged by People for the American Way.
The WASHINGTON POST on Thursday claims Chase unleashed a rant against President Bush that stunned the crowd.
He deployed the four-letter word that got Vice President Dick Cheney in hot water, using it as a noun. Chase called the prez a "dumb (expletive)." He also used it as an adjective, assuring the audience, "I'm no (expletive) clown either. ... This guy started a jihad."
Chase also said: "This guy in office is an uneducated, real lying schmuck ... and we still couldn't beat him with a bore like Kerry."
People for the American Way distanced itself Wednesday from the actor's rant.
Founder Norman Lear tells the paper: "I thought it was utterly untoward, obviously unexpected and unscripted and all that stuff. And, uh _ it was Chevy Chase. He'll live with it, I won't."

Sen. Tom Daschle, the former minority leader, looked taken aback when he went on directly after Chase. His opening line: "I've had to follow a lot of speakers, but _ " The movie star didn't return for a curtain call or to savor dessert at the reception after the event. We were told he hurt his back and needed to call it a night by 9. Chase's PR rep told us Wednesday she was unable to reach him. Meanwhile, the other host of the evening, the newly blond Cynthia Nixon, told us she had a more gracious message for Bush: "Don't just listen to people who are telling you yes, listen to the people who are telling you no!"
This has-been (personally, a never was) really really must be hurting for publicity.
Agreed. The worst in the series--"European Vacation"--was Quaid-less and suffered greatly because of it. Not to mention that Europe just isn't a funny setting.
Hated it. That was a mean damn movie. Seems Like Old Times was good, though, and I can enjoy the Vacation movies. The Christmas one was my least favorite, but the Vegas one is surprisingly watchable.
Other than that, Chevy's a grade-A moron. A few years back, he was saying that Cuba's communist system was perhaps superior to our own. "How do we know they're not right and we're wrong?" was what he said.
This from WHAT? A Hollywood lemming who lived a couple of decades in a drug-haze?
Cornelius Crane Chase
He has a B.A. in English from Bard College. (IV?)
RESUME: He's been an actor (What's he done since the '80's?)
a truck driver
a tennis pro
a bar tender.
Anyone impressed?
"I'm Chevy Chase, and I'm a has-been"
Exactly.......when he insults the President he insults all of us.
Stupid has been that he is. I'm SO sick of the Hollywood mouthpieces thinking anyone really cares what they think.
Yep. The European one was the worst, although the Vegas one runs a close second. I totally agree that Europe is just not a fun setting. And most of us can't relate to talking a European vacation because a lot of us haven't taken European Vacation. The Vegas one I didn't like in large part because of the whole thing with him swinging across the Hover Dam on a power line just made it unrealistic. I liked the original and the Christmas one though
Check out these jump the shark comments...hehe http://www.jumptheshark.com/c/chevychase.htm
Well sometimes comedy has to be mean! There were lots of subtle little jokes courtesy of underated director George Roy Hill. Usually 'city folks go to the country' films makes the city folks look like poor abused sophisticates amongst the rabble. This one skewered both sides.
THere are two funny moments in European Vacation...
1) "Hey kids...Big Ben...Parliament" Those who have seen it know what I mean.
2) THe French waiter...and the subtitles on what he is REALLY saying...sums up the French, and how we feel about them.
thanks! v. good suggestion. i will. thats a good site and im sure ill be busting a gut reading the cc posts there.
his show felt like a 60 minute awkward pause in a conversation.
yeah.. eddie was looking like he could have been a contender. you have to admit bev hills cop was cool. but for the past ten years nothing really. maybe that north hollywood incident gave him a body blow he cant recover from. i dont think many people care about that though.

The most Chevy can hope for is a part in a sub B movie where he can once again prove he is no longer as funny as a Bill Murry.
Good link. My favorite:
The best moment EVER came when he was interviewing Burt Reynolds. Burt was griping about Loni Anderson going on the Tonight Show and discussing their breakup in public. Chevy said, "but you're doing the same thing." Burt's response - "Yeah, but nobody's watching." A classic TV moment.
