Documents Challenge Kojo Annan's Story

WASHINGTON — Documents seen by FOX News suggest a conflict of interest may exist between Kofi Annan's (search) son, the Swiss company he worked for and the United Nations.

Congressional investigators are examining those records and thousands of pages of others as part of their probe into the controversial U.N. Oil-for-Food (search) program. FOX News was permitted to review some documents but not make copies.

Kojo Annan (search), the son of the U.N. secretary general, claims he has never been involved directly or indirectly with any business related to the United Nations. And Cotecna Inspection S.A., the company Kojo worked for, also maintains that the younger Annan was never asked to deal with the United Nations and that there was never any conflict of interest.

Cotecna is a Swiss-based company that inspected freight shipments going into Iraq on behalf of Oil-for-Food; it employs 4,000 people in 100 countries. Both the company and the elder Annan have said that Kojo had nothing to do with the troubled U.N. program.

W is apparently quite serious about collecting Kofi's scalp.

oh contra...unlike the Congress, W has publicly supported Kofi and is sending Colin and Condi to meet with Kofi today to get additional UN support for the Iraq elections (which is not needed) in exchange for the US overlooking Kofi's corruption.

Noted in the article that Powell & Rice will be meeting w/ Annan. Didn't attach much significance to that--seems reasonable given that the head of the ship of State is changing. Attached more significance to the fact that Annan is the one doing the travelling--the meeting is in DC. Also assume that the investigating congress members get some directives from the WH. I think that Bush is intent on discrediting Annan...objective is probably not to bring him down at the UN (I think he's gone in '06 anyway) but more along the lines of rendering him impotent now & going forward, post UN. (Reckon that 'scalping' wasn't the right metaphor...'radical circumcision' probably more accurate.)

Annan:

To prove I have overwhelming support at the U.N., I will put out an email asking staff members to voice their confidence in me. Staff will have 3 choices - yes, yes or yes. Didnt Saddam do something similar to this several years ago, when he ran in his own election as the only candidate and got 99% of the vote? Oh, but I forget what buddies Kofi & Saddam are!

The biggest scandal in human history would have been glossed over if FOX hadn't stepped up to investigate it. Kudos to Brit and the boys.
