"About 5:30 p.m., Kurt Jacobson drove his motorcycle into the crowded restaurant and spun his rear wheel until it created enough smoke to clear out the restaurant, bar owner Bobby Joe Bailey said."

He should have been thrown in jail at that point.

I can't figure out the point of the story.
The guy was an idiot, did some idiotic stuff and then he died. End of story. It happens all the time.

Good grief! This place is awfully close to where I live--but it must be way back off the road, because I've never seen it.

This whole thing is terrible. I guess the only good news is that these people didn't kill anyone but themselves.

If alcohol impairment is reason to restrict operation of a motor vehicle it certainly should be reason to restrict the police power of an impaired individual. Public intoxication charges don't even require a degree of intoxication for conviction. Maybe police officers under the influence of alcohol or other drugs should not be allowed to have police powers. Unfortunately drunk police officers are rarely held accountable for their actions. For that matter officers are very rarely even required to submit to testing to determine their degree of impairment.

"Shortly after 7 p.m., the couple died after their motorcycle crashed into a guardrail near Bee Creek, less than a mile east of the restaurant in western Travis County. Bailey said he was not sure when they left the bar."

My guess would be about 30 to 45 seconds earlier.

"Bayardo said the tests showed no trace of drugs"

Except of course the damned alcohol. I hate drunks and would rejoice in the return of Prohibition.

I rode a bike for 18 months and would never have even one beer before I got on. You need too many of your senses and abilities at 100% to take a chance.

I bought a 1971 Triumph 650 last night. Now I have to make room for bike number 4 in the garage. I'll have to move the bicycles to the shed.

Drinking and riding is pretty dumb.

Sgt. Joe Says:

Couple of punks with no respect for the law. Sad thing about it, they "knew better", or did they "know" that they were "better" than Joe Citizen? Their "brother officers" did nothing to stop them? At least these a-holes succeeded in taking themselves out.

Does the Austin PD consider the woman's death, "in the line of duty"?

Since she was engaged in a criminal act, would that void any type of insurance payment?

And, of course..."professional coutesy" PREVENTED the LEO's there at the bar from cuffing these morons BEFORE they committed MORE offenses and caused more damage...

Which is why I'm afraid ALL cops must be tarred with the same brush...if it's only 1 or 2% that are the problem...the 98 or 99% who, by silence or obliviousness, CONDONE and support their actions make THEM public enemy #1! Worse that the crips and bloods...worse than "Hell's Angels"...and quite possibly worse than the Jihadis that are a threat to Humanity!

End the Code Red...end the Blue Wall...no more "professional courtesy" for cop families and connected politicos. If the wife of a police Sgt. gets caught DUI...BUST her...if the Sgt. is caught...BUST HIM!

No more "no-knock raids" on the WRONG house, and then skate on an C.Y.A internal investigation probe...no more BAD shoots that are swept under the rug, while citizens are HOUNDED for defending themselves in their own homes!

Treat ALL equal under the law, and the populace MIGHT return to respecting them. We are NOT subjects...we are cityizens that have guaranteed rights...no matter WHAT the JBT's and the corrupt politicos do.

There was a whole lota drinkin' goin' on here!

The retired detective probably consumed between 15 and 20 "drinks" over the course of this event, depending on how long the event lasted, to reach his BAC.

For example:
20 U.S. beers in 6 hours for a 230 pound male.
17 U.S. beers in 3 hours

Calculator here:

...a blood-alcohol level of 0.24 — three times the state limit of 0.08 — .... his passenger, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.33, more than four times the legal limit, Bayardo said.

Holy shit. How could this guy even get up on his Harley? and how did his passenger stay on?
