Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates was elected Tuesday to serve on the board of directors of prominent investment company Berkshire Hathaway.
In doing so, Gates will serve as an advisor to longtime friend and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett.
In a statement, Gates said he hoped his years of experience at Microsoft would prove to be of value to Berkshire's shareholders.
"I am delighted and honored to have been asked to serve on the board of this very successful company," Gates said. Gates also serves on the board of Bothell, Wash.-based biotech company Icos.
Despite being close to Gates, Buffett has long eschewed investing in technology companies, concentrating much of his investment in the insurance business.
In 1997, top Microsoft Office executive Jeff Raikes sent Buffett an e-mail urging the billionaire to consider investing in Microsoft, noting the economic "moat" between Microsoft and its competitors was stronger than other Hathaway investments, such as Coca-Cola.
The e-mail came to light during a consumer class-action trial in Minnesota.

He's no socialist. He wants to be able to game the system, and with dems in power he can do that.
One way is to take a company that is prevented from growing due to regulations or taxes or whatever, he buys them, its his lawyers, and his money, and he can "get them over the hump" so to speak.
He's like a predator who picks on the wounded who have been ravaged by the dems.
The irony is that his dad Howard Buffet was a great conservative congressman back in the day.
You are very aware. But it's not just Buffett that plays that way. Many wealthy dems do the same thing. They want absolute control of Congress, Courts and local jurisdictions. They also want the White House.
The sole reason for their dem party support is dems are easier to bribe. Republicans often have that morality thing that gets in their way.
It's a wonderful life.
