That was before the end of "major combat operations" in Europe, right? Before the military declared, "Mission accomplished"?

The current mission was accomplished (ousting Saddam), and a new one was taken up (rebuilding Iraq). Keeping the WWII motif, bi***ing about the Mission Accomplished episode is like bi***ing about saying the mission was accomplished in taking Tarawa, or North Africa, or any other number of smaller missions that made up the whole of WWII

Absolutely right. The critics of "Mission Accomplished" are insulting the troops who toppled the Saddam regime and occupied the country in an amazingly short campaign. They accomplished their mission, all right, and then some.
