Kerik's e-mail messages fuel mess

DOI to get memos offering inside info on city contracts and a mob probe

Former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik is likely to face fresh questions about his conduct this week when explosive E-mails are turned over to city investigators, the Daily News has learned.

The messages were sent by Kerik to Lawrence Ray, one of his closest friends and the best man at his 1998 wedding.

They could prove another headache for Kerik. The E-mails provided to The News appear to show Kerik offering a company inside details of a city investigation into its mob links and advance notice of upcoming city contracts.

(snip)

The E-mails in Ray's possession portray a troubling mix of official duties and private interests, especially considering how close Kerik came to an extremely sensitive national post.

Ray says that many of the dozens of E-mails he has kept were sent in 1999, when Kerik headed the city's jails, and just after Interstate had hired Ray and Kerik's brother, Don.

Interstate's owner, Frank DiTomasso, who has long denied links to the mob, hired Ray in late 1998, based on a recommendation from Kerik, according to a sworn deposition DiTomasso gave city investigators in June 2000.

Ray's job at Interstate was to ease the minds of mob-wary regulators.

Many of the E-mails were announcements about Kerik's television appearances or dispatches from vacations. But others could be of interest to DOI.

Ray says that one E-mail suggests that Kerik planned to pass along inside information from a city investigation into Interstate.

Another passage, Rays says, shows Kerik guiding him on how to help Interstate with the city's Trade Waste Commission.

In the E-mail Kerik suggested that Ray push a security firm that Interstate had just hired, Copstat, which was run by former NYPD officials.

New Kerik Emails May Prove Damaging

(snip)

Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen has more on a new investigation by the city.

It's important to remember: We haven't seen the emails. Bernard Kerik's own lawyer hasn't seen the emails. The city hasn't seen them, either.

But, as reported in print today, the emails do exist--and they are damaging against Bernard Kerik.

The personal emails were allegedly sent from Kerik to his friend, Lawrence Ray, in 1999. Ray claims he saved those emails on his AOL account.

At the time, Ray worked for a company called Interstate Industrial, under investigation by the city for links to the mob.

In one of the emails, Kerik allegedly plans to pass along inside information about the city's case to Ray. In other messages, Kerik apparently guides Ray about how to secure city contracts.

All this, as Kerik headed the city's Department of Corrections. Kerik's lawyer spoke with us today by phone.

Joseph Tacopina, Kerik attorney: "Interstate did not get any city contracts after 1999. There is absolutely no way that inside information was passed on to Interstate for the purpose of obtaining inside contracts. It did not happen."

Still, Ray says he has the emails and will hand them over to the city's Department of Investigation this week.

Joseph Tacopina: "Lawrence Ray is a guy who was, you know, told reams of people that he was going to get even with Bernie Kerik. But Bernie terminated their relationship when he was indicted on federal securities fraud. Bernie was the commissioner of the DOC, and had to end this relationship--but Lawrence Ray didn't accept that as a reason."

sure, Kerik would be emailing this kind of stuff to someone's AOL account. unless they can come up with a backup tape from the city's computers that were the source of the email, with a chain of custody to make sure it wasn't tampered with, using an email message as "evidence" means next to nothing.

that's why so many freepers are all over these Kerik threads - they want to take down Rudy.

what they don't understand, is that the first SCOTUS nominee that comes up for consideration, is going to get the same scrutiny. If that nominee had sex outside of marriage, or the Dems can cook up some person in his past that is willing to "tell a story" about him - he's going down.

If the Supreme Court nominee is this slimy, the nominee doesn't deserve the same scrutiny?

I beg to differ...

If the evidence suggests the guy's a dirty cop, I CARE.

This nitwit was close to running Homeland Security.

In my opinion, it is the only one worth talking about.

Ray was convicted along with various mobsters in a penny-stock scam, accused of bribing a brokerage house. Kerik is still dabbling in garbage penny stocks, getting millions of shares of stock, stock options and interest free loans in exchange for coordinating sales of various products. I want to see the whole story.

I'd say Tacopina is taking license with language.....

Sooooo. ?
I couldn't pass a media frenzy investigating me but that doesn't mean I accept the post of Homeland security. Kerik is a class A jerk not for having a "naughty " history but for putting himself in this position knowing he was so libel to embarrass the Prez.

We'll find someone besides Rudy....there is no shortage of bright competent conservatives.

"The one this is gonna dammage is Rudy."

Huh??

I don't get this premise.

Hitlery Clinton is tied to $100,000 in "cattle futures," Vince Foster, and releasing the FALN terrorists, AND her dirty, scummy husband, and it's Rudy who's got credibility problems??

Interesting that he limits his comment to Interstate. The broader question would be whether inside information was being passed on -- Period! Whether to the network of companies, or associated individuals.

OK, so mark that down - any SCOTUS nominee that has had sex outside his marriage, is disqualified. Or, if they sold some stock options in a company - same thing. or if we look at a list of the contractors who renovated their homes, if any are "linked" to the mob - they are disqualified.

you might as well let the Dems and the MSM select the SCOTUS nominees, if those are the ground rules you want to play under.

Kerik dropped out because of the nanny-gate immigration and tax issue - all this other stuff, is just a smear campaign. and for people here to be gleeful about that, just remember that its going to happen to the SOCTUS nominees too. Digging around to find out that Bork rented adult films - that's going to look like beanbag this time around.

for the purpose of obtaining inside contracts.

Tacopina omits denying the aforementioned claim of Kerik passing "inside" information related to the investigation of Interstates mob connections.......notice how (in Tacopinas statement he changes it to "inside CONTRACTS"

With all the junk that has come out on Kerik, how did he ever make the long list, much less the short list and nomination?

Someone really screwed up on checking his background.

When the Dems for started slinging mud, it appeared to be sour grapes on their part. But as more revelations come to light about Kerik, it is staggering to think how he ever got nominated.

While I don't like Kerik, your point here is well taken and accurate. Perhaps Kerik could have been straight with the vetting dudes. Perhaps we should just get ahead of the MSM on these "discoveries" about conservative nominees, put it out there and go from there. Why wait for the MSM to always come up with some "shocking " news discovery.
