I believe Mfume was in dispute with Julian Bond, the president of NAACP. Mfume wants the organization to accept the fact that a Republican is in the White House and deal with it. Bond, more hardcore liberal between the two, rejected this. So, by accepting Mfume, Bush was playing "the lesser of two evils", "divide and conquer", and looked presidential at the same time.

It is idiotic to even talk to these people....They
hgave only one agenda and that is to discredit this
President who actually cares about people and is
an authentic person-- you can compare this with the
guy they all adore...Bill Clinton. So if I had my
druthers -it would be go catch a rolling donut...but
hell, I am not one to forgive and forget...and as
that old bullsh****..used to say..And that's the way
it is......Jake
