The group that organizes the annual Pride Celebration in Minneapolis has filed a civil rights complaint against the Minneapolis Star Tribune because the newspaper refused to run advertisements that included a photograph of two men kissing.
The complaint filed with the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission was announced Monday by GLBT Pride/Twin Cities, a volunteer group that has sponsored the June festivals since 1972. This year an estimated 400,000 people attended six events, making it the third-largest festival of its kind in the United States for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons.
The complaint claims representatives of the newspaper said the photo of the kiss, which was part of a larger advertisement, was "inflammatory" and insisted on it being removed from the ad.
At a news conference, Pride officials distributed copies of a letter from Stephen J. Burns, an attorney for the McClatchy Co., the corporate owner of the Star Tribune. In the letter, Burns states, "Star Tribune's policy is not to show kissing in advertisements, heterosexual or otherwise."
To counter that claim, Pride officials displayed copies of movie advertisements in the Star Tribune showing men and women kissing, plus an ad published on Dec. 5 that showed a woman kissing a man who was holding keys to a BMW over her head.
Ben Taylor, a spokesman for the newspaper, said he could not comment specifically on the matter because it is "a legal proceeding."
"We stand by our decision not to run the ad as submitted, and we disagree with GLBT on the appropriateness of the ad," Taylor said.
"We are disappointed that GLBT would take this action after [our having] partnered with them, sponsored their events and supported their core principles for many years."
Well, you know what I mean.
Wow. The Star Tribune is a seriously Left-wing rag. I'm surprised they wouldn't run such an ad.
Of course, that would expose what a ridiculously Left-wing rag the Red Star Tribune is, so I suppose they're method to their madness.
doncha just luv it...
Whoa...there's a visual I didn't need.
Nothing finer than liberal attacking liberal.
Women look okay doing this. But, really, guys look best doing this . . . |
"We are disappointed that GLBT would take this action after [our having] partnered with them, sponsored their events and supported their core principles for many years."Oh, you mean appeasement doesn't work?
Imagine the jury selection for that one:
No republicans need apply.
No christians need apply.
No normal men need apply.
No mothers need apply.
No fathers need apply.

I never knew a Bacon Lettuce Tomato samich could file complaints
This has nothing to do with civil rights!
This is nothing but a summary judgement destined slap suit created for free PR.
Look for homo-groups to pushing public homosexual kissing onto the public AGAIN.
If anything we need to keep pushing the Federal Marriage Amendment. It may be a non sequiter on this specific issue but it is a way to fight back against the mainstreaming of recreational sex perverts.
