Informant's tip led FBI to burial site in Queens lot

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The New York Medical Examiner's Office has identified the skeletons of Philip "Phil Lucky" Giaccone and Dominick "Big Trin" Trinchera, two Mafia figures believed to be the victims of a gangland shooting more than 20 years ago, FBI officials said Tuesday.

Agents from the FBI's Bonanno and Gotti squads, along with the New York City Police Department's cold case squad, dug through concrete and sifted through dirt in a Queens lot for three weeks in October after a tip by an informant.

Giaccone's remains were initially identified by pieces of personal property found with his bones, including a Piaget watch that matched a description given by family associates, a law enforcement official told CNN.

[snip] Authorities originally believed as many as six murder victims were buried in the lot in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including Luchese family associates Joseph Spione and Thomas DeSimone, plus John Favara, a Queens furniture store manager who they say was killed because he accidentally ran over the 12-year-old son of former Gambino mob boss John Gotti.

DeSimone, from Queens, was reported missing in January 1979; he is suspected of being part of a Lufthansa Airlines cargo heist in 1978.

However, investigators did not find any of their remains during the excavation.

"Our belief is that we've found whatever it is to be found there," FBI spokesman Jim Margolin said.

Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas was based on DeSimone.

All this story needs is a good screenwriter.

Maybe Irvine Welsh is up to the job!

Wasn't this murder already depicted in a movie?

Oh, the murder itself?!

Yes, it has been portrayed on the silver screen.

I just thought the forensic analysis of the bodies might make for a neat "Law & Order" DVD.

Just in case their stellar writing staff ever runs out of ideas.

It is amazing so many people knew about the murder and they haven't found the bodies until now.

There is good and bad in every family. On my mother's father's side, he had a brother who was a Sicilian who started up what we call the mob around 1917.
As a child, I remember these east coast relatives visiting Los Angeles. All were teamsters bosses here on business.
None of our family ever kept contact with that branch of the family. What you might find interesting is the power is never were you think it is.
In this modern day on the east coast, I think it lies with twins.
How's that for a cryptic post?

I keep no contact with them. We are a religious family and that one small part is a disappointment to say the least.

My family has lots of disappointments in it.

But yes, my mother shielded us from some of the more unsavory elements of her family as I was growing up.

Remind me some day to tell you the story of the WW2 fighter pilot that became an engineer building planes for Boeing (747 among others), how he was out-sourced to the Pentagon for weapons systems. (Claimed we had most of what we see in Star Trek)
Then he eventually died under suspicious circumstances and the mob seemed to take revenge.

I can write one hell of a book based on mostly reality if I wished to.
Still I wouldn't go within a thousand miles of some people.
