Yay.

I wonder. How significant would this be to the second amendment controversy if the first sentence read:

"Last week, Janet Reno and the United States Justice Department publicly released a long document, signed by three deputy assistant attorneys general, spelling out in great detail the linguistic, historical, and case-law reasons why it officially considers the right to own guns a collective right, as evidenced by the phrase "a well regulated Militia", and not an individual right like the rights protected by the First Amendment."

Hmmmmm.

Now, I think it's great that the Justice Department came down on the side of individual ownership. It's one more nail in the coffin of the collective right supporters.

But they could just as easily done differently under a liberal administration. And had the same net effect: None.

There is some net effect. This memorandum steers federal prosecution on firearms issues for all federal agencies. There is a trickle down on this with many state and municipal agencies.

Its not as relevant as a Supreme Court decision for sure. But, it will keep some cases from reaching any court at all.
