I read the affidavit....the PC was 14 years old ????

Here is a Sept. 1990 ad for Gateway 2000: Fully loaded 25 Mhz 486, 4 Meg RAM, 150 Mb hard drive, VGA: $5,295.

How could this thing be useful at all ?

If it only counts punched cards, it might run DOS and and softaware specific to the serial-connected counter that does the counter.

Old, yes. Prone to hardware failure, yes. Cheap, yes.
