A priest is in a critical condition after being attacked by men armed with machetes on an island where Westerners have been warned they are at risk from Muslim terrorists.
The attack on Indonesia's troubled Sulawesi island came as a massive security operation involving 130,000 officers got underway after intelligence indicated attacks on Western and local targets were being planned by militants in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
The priest, a Christian identified as Jemris Tambalino, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
He was attack in Poso town by up to five unidentified men as he rode on a motorcycle with a friend this morning.
"He was slashed with machetes wounding his face, while his friend suffered injuries to his hand," S B Rorimpandey, a police official, told Reuters.
"A search for the men is underway," he said, adding it was unclear what denomination the priest belonged to.
Poso is about 900 miles northeast of Jakarta, where more than 2,000 people have died in Muslim-Christian clashes since 1998.
Religious tensions have risen in the run-up to Christmas in Central Sulawesi province, where two small bombs rocked a church in the capital of Palu near Poso during a service on Dec 12.
Motorists also sprayed bullets at another church nearby, wounding three people.
Hundreds of people have died, many of them foreign tourists, in attacks blamed on al-Qa'eda-linked militants in recent years.
Police have said about two-thirds of the total force would patrol churches, shopping centres and other public places during the Christmas and New Year period.
Murderous muslims at it, again? Natch.
I feel sorry for the guy, but, really, those headline writers need to step back and look at their work.
