December 29, 2004 -- Animal lovers are worried that the Freedom Tower will turn out to be a giant death trap for birds. At 1,776 feet, the Freedom Tower is expected to be the world's tallest building when it opens at the World Trade Center site in 2009. But scientists and bird enthusiasts say more than a billion birds are killed every year in the United States after slamming into windows or circling lights atop skyscrapers until they are so dazed and confused that they crash.

This is actually strengthing the species of these birds by getting rid of ones that are confused by tall buildings.

Well... at least they're not confused by tall tales (e.g., this thread) !!! :-))

This is actually strengthing the species of these birds by getting rid of ones that are confused by tall buildings. Given that theory I would postulate that someday armadillos will be able to cross a highway safely

Nope, that's God's curse upon them. When they see fast moving vehicles, they are driven by divine purpose to act as speed bumps.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To prove to the armadillo it could be done.

I don't think you would need to be that extreme. However, if I a big window and birds were crashing into I change it or add something to it to stop this. Oh, but a bird's life is not as important as you having a big picture window. Let's just get rid birds and then we can be overrun with rodents and insects.

That's almost as precious as the story a few yaers back - a cow was stuck in the mud at a drinking pond and there were other cows in the area as workers rescued the bovine. The caption was something to the effect that "The other cows looked on in horror."

Truth is, any excuse will do to stop the (ironically, German-designed) abomination they are planning to put on the WTC site.
