I became curious because there is a mound that is just three hundred yards from my front door. It is almost 50 ft in diameter and about twenty feet high.

A backhoe is fairly cheap to rent and would be perfect for this type of job!

Take your time, use a trowel, or a flat shovel held at a low angle. A backhoe could destroy far more than you recover. Take lots of pictures, and set up a grid to locate objects with.
