GAVIN NEWSOM: The First Year Bold decisions leave no doubt who's in charge at City Hall

REPORT CARD: More hits than misses in year one

-- Willie who?

A year after taking office, there is no doubt that Gavin Newsom is now the mayor of San Francisco.

He hasn't erased -- and won't -- the mark of his powerful, celebrity predecessor, the political veteran Willie Brown, but he quickly began to make his own.

Now just 37 years old, Newsom has catapulted onto the national stage -- featured in magazines from the New Yorker to Time and appearing on shows from "Nightline'' to "Larry King Live" -- during a year in which he's had both successes and failures.

The entrepreneur got his jump-start in politics when Brown appointed him to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1996. He came into the mayor's job last year with the reputation as a business-oriented policy wonk with a passion for statistics that would put a baseball fanatic to shame.

During his inauguration speech last Jan. 8 on the steps of City Hall, he vowed to be a problem-solver who would focus on ending chronic homelessness, creating jobs, cleaning the streets, making government accountable to the people, and building affordable housing.

The young Democrat, who has a fondness for quoting Robert Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., hinted in that address at what might come next when he extolled San Francisco as a place where people have the freedom "to love without the fear and bigotry that poisons so much of this world."

OBTW, Rachel Gordon used to be the Comicle's gay issues reporter. However, when she got "married" at one of Gavin's illegal ceremonies, they decided it wouldn't look objective to keep her in that role. Now she covers city politics, which in San Francisco, looks a lot like gay issues.

Yes. He was invaluable in helping increase GOP majorities in the senate and house and in reelecting President Bush. I hope he moves up in the democrat party and assumes a high-profile leadership role. If he is a typical leftist he is incapable of learning from his mistakes so his appearance on the national scene regularly can only help increase Republican domination across the nation.

No doubt...it's an opportunistic politician willing to place local political considerations ahead of morals, ethics, and the law.

damned straight........I live in the Bay Area and none of it as anywhere nears as bad as the socialist politicos in SF......that guy Newsom is a renegade flower child who belongs in jail for breaking the law. He should pay back to the city out of his pocket all the revenues he used to illegally marry all those people.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

Mayor Gavin Nuisance from Sodom by the sea (Frisco)Alert.

Excerpt:
A month after his inauguration, Newsom startled the city and the nation by announcing that San Francisco would start granting marriage licenses to gays and lesbians -- an issue never mentioned in his thick binder of policy papers crafted for the mayoral campaign.

If you want on/off the list let me know.
