KHAO LAK, Thailand - Rescuers failed on Monday to catch two rare dolphins trapped for eight days in a lagoon in southern Thailand after they were swept a mile inland by giant tsunami waves.

The exhausted dolphins, one of which appeared to be injured, were dumped in a lagoon created by the wall of water that struck Thailand’s Andaman Sea coastline on Dec. 26.

Auto Excerpt nuked it. Here's the same article from Reuters.

KHAO LAK, Thailand (Reuters) - Rescuers have failed to catch two rare dolphins trapped for eight days in a small lake
in southern Thailand after they were swept more than a kilometre inland by giant tsunami waves.

The exhausted dolphins, one of which appeared to be injured, were dumped in a 300 metre by 200 metre lake left by
the wall of water that struck Thailand's Andaman Sea coastline on December 26.

"I'm pretty sure there are two dolphins. We see one frequently, but the other one is more shy," said Edwin Wiek of the
Wildlife Rescue Unit of Thailand.

He believed they were swept ashore in the first or second waves and were stuck behind a 4-5 metre embankment
about 1,400 metres (1,500 yards) from the sea.

"When the water retreated, the dolphins probably could not follow and swim out," said Wiek, adding they appeared to
be Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, also known as speckled dolphins, found mainly in the Indian Ocean or western
Pacific.

About 50 rescuers -- including a team of Greek divers in Thailand to search for corpses hidden in similar lakes -- tried
to corner one of the dolphins with a net, but failed.

"He slipped away twice and we gave up. We need a bigger net to lock him in," said Wiek.

He said the dolphins had probably been without food since they were trapped. Rescuers, who will return on Tuesday,
tossed fish into the murky water to try and keep the animals alive.

The Indo-Pacific Humpback has a long, slender beak and gets its name from the fatty hump under its dorsal fin. Adults
grow to about 2.0-2.8 metres and weigh about 150-200 kg (330-440 lb), according to the Whale and Dolphin
Conservation Society.

Scientists view the dolphins as broadly threatened by habitat loss, pollution and hunting.

Misplaced how? Humans can help themselves and each other. How would a dolphin help itself out of a land-locked lagoon?

If someone wants to spend their efforts on resuing critters, that's their business.

What, the wildlife rescue people are somehow supposed to rescue dead humans?

"If someone wants to spend their efforts on rescuing critters, that's their business."

Well put. If it had been a litter of puppies or kittens, the responses to this post would have been different, I suspect.

If envirowhackos want to do something like rescue a couple of trapped dolphins that's far better than torching Hummer dealerships. I don't see what's wrong with it. You might argue that they should be helping people instead of animals, but I've got a feeling if they weren't trying to rescue the dolphins they still wouldn't be out helping people. As long as they don't ask for a government grant, I think they should be congratulated for their efforts.

Given the scope of the tragedy the dophin rescuers efforts would be better put to human assistance instead of a pair of dolphins, IMO.

They could just shoot them and save the time. It would be the humane thing to do.

Just self-appointed heroes helping some misfortune creatures that may of been overlooked. More power to them, as long as they don't get in the way of the rescue work for a few hundred thousand human victims while they are patting themselves on the back.

Hey if they want come to Florida and rescue a few alligators, I'll just step aside and let them.

I keep hearing about how the intelligent elephants and mices and bunnies were much smarter than the people and none of them died.

If dolphins are supposed to be the smartest of all animals, why were these two so stupid that they are now in trouble.

I guess they don't talk to the elephants.

environmental wackos have always valued the lives of animals more than the lives of humans, its a sick mentality... though what they don't get is if it was up to the animals they would just eat the wackos.

First, I think calling these people environmental wackos is a bit over the top. You know these people? Second, dolphins eating humans? Gimme a break....dolphins have been known to rescue many humans in trouble. Take a breath and don't lump everyone into one category.

Well it did say that there were rescue teams there looking for dead corpses so maybe after all the dead people the rescuers need to help rescue something that can still be helped.
