THANK YOU PET OWNERS! Injured Marine Needs Help, Freepers Respond!

FRiends,

As many of you know, The Hobbit Hole has been following the story of Andy, a young Marine that was injured in Fallujah on Thanksgiving Day. You can read about our initial introduction to Andy here...

Initial introduction.

I’ve posted periodic updates from his mother and the Hobbit Hole has sent cards and even sent him a couple of our knives, one especially fine knife with his name engraved on it, as a token of our appreciation.

Andy is doing well, although he had to make the decision not long ago to have his wounded leg removed. Since then, he has really progressed. He still has quite a bit of rehab to go.

If you have the Time Magazine with Bush on the front...the Man of the Year magazine...Andy is in the section where he is getting his Purple Heart from President Bush. He is shaking the president’s hand. You can see Andy, but all you can see of Bush is his hand and forearm.

At this current time, his parents are staying at the Navy Lodge and I asked them if there was anything we could do for them. They had only one request and I thought I would pass it on to the animal lovers of this forum.

They need help with the cost of boarding both Andy’s dog Gus, and their own animals during the time they are staying with Andy. The animals are being boarded at:

Fur Family Members Pet Care
2110 Strickland Bridge Rd
Fayetteville, NC 28304
910-426-3400

If you can help with this, even if just a little, please send a check to this business, designated “Hatcher Boarding Costs”. The Hatchers have asked for nothing except this one thing and they didn’t even ask for this until I asked them.

Thanks for any help you can give...

We're sending some too. I hope they get enough help!

Wouldn't it be better to send the checks, made out to the boarding place, to the dogs owners so that they can know exactly how much should be credited towards the housing of Gus?

Call me a cynic but it seems the prudent thing to do.

We aren't that organized, what do you have in mind? Printing something to put up somewhere?

Yes, they are at the mercy of the kennel crediting their account with all the checks coming in. But this is the way they requested help could be given. They aren't home to take care of it, and they trust this kennel. When they are going through what they are going through, they are having to trust a lot of people.

The real bean the dog (14 yr. old Lakeland Terrier) has informed me if I don't donate to this cause he'll make me get up 10 times every night to let him out instead of the usual 5, so a check will be in the mail tomorrow. I guess we know who's King of my castle.

We aren't that organized ...................LOL, NEITHER am I!!!!! (that's why I was asking)

I thought I could get a bunch printed up and passed to local Vet groups, HS kids, the NG Armory, Yahoo rescue groups, groceries, gas stations, etc, etc.

That would be one way of going about it, but it's not what they suggested. They gave me the name of the boarding place and the name of the lady that owns it. Told me she doesn't accept credit cards but would take a check.

They didn't say so, but perhaps they don't want their personal info being passed around...this way you can help, while dealing directly with the business. They must trust them!

I know what you mean, though...it's why I provided a phone number so you can at least call and speak with the owner. It's not fool-proof, but it's something, anyway...

Heh!!!! I guess we know!

I only have chickens...six of 'em...but I love 'em like babies. They think I am "She who can Fix Anything."

They follow me around and sit on my lap! Who knew chickens could be so friendly? I sure didn't know it till I got mine!

Very locally, I think that would be good for someone in immediate contact with the family to do. I don't think we want to petition on that large a scale (FR is a closer-knit group) for this situation, but feel free to copy and forward it to anyone you know!

Great idea. Isn't there a way you can ping NC freepers?

Just got an email from Lisa...

I was right about the credit card situation...she doesn't take credit cards, she said she doesn't want to set up a Paypal account because her accountant takes care of her financial stuff and she would be happy to accept checks toward the Hatcher's account.

I warned her there's liable to be a few! :-)

Just got an email from the owner. She said "My address is both, 2102 is my house and 2110 is the kennel. They are both located on the same property so either is good."

Whew...I was ever so slightly anxious about that!

I looked into trying to foster military pets here, being able to take on anything from dogs and cats to horses or a goat, but there wasn't an organized program

Patriotic Pets, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping service personnel find and reserve temporary homes for their pets during military deployment.

That site appears to be under construction. The "how to help" and "applications" links go nowhere.

But thanks! There was a national organization I looked into, maybe that one, with volunteer coordinators and foster homes in the CA area and near a few other bases, but none were set up near me, at that time anyhow.

I don't have a NC ping list, perhaps if someone posted on the North Carolina local board.

It seems like such an easy solution. I am sure someone with a big heart and a yard can take in an injured soldier's dog for a month or so. For pete's sake, that man lost his leg for our freedom, the least we can do is offer his best friend some grass and a bowl of kibble.

I had this as an old bookmark, the link under old webpages works. We thought we were going to a have a need for their services.

We ended up calling the NG for this area and they had a few suggestions for those who were deploying
