Armed and trendy: Will Gurkha bodyguard fad go Hollywood?
Boston Herald ^ | January 4, 2005 | Christopher Cox

The latest gotta-have-it celebrity accessory may be exotic bodyguards. We're not talking muscle-bound men in black or former Green Berets. For this detail, only Gurkhas will do. The Nepalese soldiers are famed for their valor, loyalty and discretion. Gurkha units served with distinction in both world wars, as well as the 1982 Falklands dust-up and the 1991 Persian Gulf conflict. Gurkhas also work security details for cruise lines, businessmen, potentates and the coalition in Iraq.

If Gurkha bodyguards become this year's "must have" celebrity accessory, who will take care of the no-longer-needed Cambodian children?

Aren't these the fellows who say they never draw those huge knives they carry unless they DEFINITELY plan to use them?

Tough guys.

And their knives are out of season; here, it's AK-47s.

Uhhh. Gurkhas are proficient with modern weapons. I would be a lot more concerned about hiring soldiers for what is essentially a security job. Soldiers are trained to perform a very different job than are bodyguards.

Gurkha (or Gorkha) are a people from Nepal who take their name from the former city-state of Gorkha, which went on to found the Kingdom of Nepal later on. They are most famous as foreign soldiers serving the British Army.

Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had country more faithful friends than you. Sir Ralph Turner (former officer in the 3rd Gurkha Rifles). Carved on the London memorial to Britain's Gurkha soldier unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on December 3, 1997

Gurkhas claim descent from the Rajputs of Northern India who entered modern-day Nepal from the west. In the early 1500s they conquered the small state of Gorkha and adopted its name. By 1769, the Gorkha dynasty had taken over the area of modern Nepal. They made Hinduism the state religion.

In the Gurkha War (1814–1816) they waged war with the British East India Company army. The British were impressed by the Gurkha soldiers and began to regularly hire them as mercenaries into Gurkha regiments in the East India Company army.

Under international law present day British Gurkhas are not mercenaries. They are fully integrated soldiers of the British Army, operate in formed units of the Brigade of Gurkhas and abide by the rules and regulations under which all British soldiers serve. Similar rules apply for Gurkhas serving in the Indian Army.

I love the joke about Gurkhas being training in low-altitude drops over enemy territory. Told that the plane would be dropping them from 500 feet, the Gurkhas became uncharacteristically nervous. Their leader suggested that perhaps the altitude could be changed. "Can we drop from 100 feet?" he asked. The colonel stared at him and then explained that the parachutes would never open from such a reduced height. "Oh!" said the Gurkha. Turning to his man he exclaimed. "It's alright boys! They're giving us parachutes!"

Wonder if actor and Vietnam 'veteran' Brian Dennehy will hire a gurka? (Dennehy claimed for years that he fought in Vietnam. He never did).
