At the Virigina Military Institute, Dixie has been banned since the mid-1970s, when black cadets protested what had been the corps' favorite song (second only to the the school fight song, The Spirit of V.M.I.). The solution, which as been amusing cadets and alumni to this day, has been to replace Dixie with The Bonnie Blue Flag, a song equally associated with the late confederacy for which VMI fought.

There are three versions of that song. Maybe he was upset that these lines were NOT sung? LOL! I can't find any connection to slavery in any version at this site. IIRC, "Dixie" was written AFTER slavery was abolished, and was basically a "Call to Arms" rallying song for the south.
