TEHRAN (MNA) –- President Mohammad Khatami said here on Tuesday that the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime, ethnic disputes, and terrorism are the main threats to the Islamic world.
He made the remarks in a meeting with Algeria’s new ambassador to Iran, Mohammad Amin Dragi, saying the two countries should step up efforts to confront common threats and pursue bilateral interests.
Khatami praised Algeria for its independence struggle, progress, and development, stressing that the two countries should strive to exploit their potential in the best way possible.
The president stated that he had held constructive talks with Algerian officials during his recent trip to the country and expressed hope that Iran-Algeria ties would develop in all areas.
The Algerian ambassador also expressed hope that ties between Iran and Algeria would expand during his mission in the country.
He delivered the warm greetings of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to President Khatami and called the Iranian president’s trip to Algeria a turning point in Tehran-Algiers ties.
In another meeting with Gambia’s new ambassador to Iran, Lamin Bajo, Khatami said that efforts must be made to swiftly implement the Iran-Gambia agreements.
The common stances of Iran and Gambia in the international arena and the Islamic world have led to closer ties between the two countries, he added. Referring to the countries’ common views on opposing unilateralism, establishing peace and justice in the world, and combating terrorism, violence, and oppression, Khatami said, “We support the historical and inalienable right of the Palestinian nation to determine their fate.”
The president pointed to Gambia’s “significant” efforts to boost development and establish democracy and praised the country’s endeavors to establish peace in West Africa.
He also expressed hope that the two sides would boost cooperation, both in bilateral and international affairs, in order to protect their common interests.
For his part, Gambian Ambassador Bajo delivered the warm greetings of the Gambian president to Khatami.
He called for strengthening ties with Iran and voiced Gambia’s support for Iran in its policies in the international arena.
He also announced that the Gambian president has officially invited Khatami to visit the African country.
The new ambassadors of Algeria and Gambia both presented their credentials to President Khatami during the meetings.
