JONESBORO, Georgia (AP) -- On his first day on the job, the new sheriff called 27 employees into his office, stripped them of their badges, fired them, and had rooftop snipers stand guard as they were escorted out the door. The move Monday by Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill provoked an angry reaction and prompted a judge to order him to rehire the employees. "It appears ... that employees of the Sheriff were terminated without cause" and in violation of the county's civil service rules, Judge Stephen Boswell wrote in granting a 30-day restraining order. Hill, 39, defended the firings and said the new sheriff has the right to shake up the department in whatever way he feels necessary. He told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he fired the employees to "maintain the integrity of the department." "A lot of people are under the impression that the sheriff's office is under civil service laws," he said. "But my research shows the employees work at the pleasure of the sheriff." The firings had a racial overtone. Hill was among a spate of black candidates elected last year in the county once dominated by rural whites. The county seat was the setting for the fictional plantation Tara in "Gone With The Wind." The fired employees included four of the highest-ranking officers, all of them white. Hill told the newspaper their replacements would be black. Another of the newly elected black officials, Eldrin Bell, called the move illegal and filed for the restraining order granted by the judge. Bell is the new county commission chairman and former Atlanta police chief. Hiring or firing on the basis of race -- black OR white -- is extremely illegal.

This is the part of this story that got my attention.
In the DeKalb County case here, where the new sheriff was murdered by a conspiracy planned by the old crooked sheriff, there was lots of squirrelly stuff going on, that caused the new sheriff to make many dismissals on taking office. He was then murdered shortly after.
I've heard of nothing like this in Clayton County, that would make moves like this more understandable.

Whether he has just cause or not, he can cover himself by saying they were fired for incompetence (yeah, sure), but he's going to have a hard time explaining the remark about replacements.
I remember when Bill O'Reilly got his shorts in a knot when white students at a Georgia High School decided to have their own all-white prom off of school grounds. He screamed and carried on, wondering why Gov. Perdue wasn't getting involved. I wonder if Ol' Bill will have the nerve to tackle this obviously racist act by this new black Sheriff.

A new broom sweeps clean. When sorted out, he may have properly exercised his powers as Sheriff. People who can't perform should be replaced.

This guy's been stoking the flames of racism for a while. From a December 2004 article in the AJC:
"Clayton County Sheriff-elect Victor Hill said vindictive politics and racism are behind a county move to shift a crime scene investigations unit from the Sheriff's Department to the Clayton County Police Department.
"It's blatantly politically motivated, and blatantly discriminatory," Hill said Wednesday in a telephone interview. Hill, who is African-American, takes office in January. "It wasn't until an African-American became sheriff . . . that any movement of these units was discussed," he said.
On Tuesday, with a roomful of Hill supporters on hand, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners approved the move 3-1 with the only African-American member, Virginia Gray, abstaining.
Hill contends that a predominantly white commission, along with a white police chief and outgoing sheriff, wants to usurp his powers before he takes office.
But county officials say the issue has been discussed for nearly a decade and would cut down on confusion between investigators in both departments. Commissioner Charley Griswell, who introduced the change at the meeting, said it's not about race or Hill.""

If these folks are Civil Service employees, he's going to have to prove they were incompetent. That includes repeated bad evaluations, write-ups, discipline, etc. You can't just say they are incompetent, you have to also be able to prove it.

hard to say what the truth of the matter is without more information.
But his comments in the paper about seeking replacing white cops with black ones sounds pretty damning, if true. That makes it sound like the firings were at least partly just because of the color of their skin, which would be flat out racism.
I'm sure that the US Justice Department will have their civil rights attorneys there in the next few minutes to file charges against the sheriff. They ususally do, don't they? Oh, I forgot, this is "reverse" discrimination which is ok.

Sorry, this is just a case of racism plain and simple. They should ride this sheriff out on a rail. He just cost that county millions.

It appears that the new Sheriff is trying to send some sort of message, unfortunately the message that's being broadcasted right now is a loud boisterous "I'm a racist!". He could have quietly replaced those officers over a period of time if he felt the officers were part of a 'good ole boy network' who had abused their powers. The remark that the replacements would be black does not look good.

The last time I looked, this was still America, and Civil Servants have to be proven incompetent before they are given the ax. This act is no different than what the Clinton's did to the White House Travel Office.
