Myself I have always preferred the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of Johnny Horton, most RMP's (Royal Military Police) Have no preference for the one I played while drinking.

In fact I think they had a distinct dislike for each version>

I agree, AJ's being a military man & his treatment of the Cherokees are probably the biggest reasons it isn't remembered. PC history books are full of Harriet Tubman, slavery and Martin Luther King, but barely mention Lincoln and Washington and rarely acknowledge Jackson. Civil War is mentioned ONLY for slavery and the EEEVIL South. Luckily, as a self-described history buff, I have preserved several pre-PC books for my kids, so maybe they can rile up their teachers one day!
