"Powell is FARRRRRRRRRRRR to weak-kneed..."

Always has been;
any time the State Department has sold-out U.S. interests, you can bet Colon Powell was behind it.

I always look at it as Bush smacking Kofi around, then, after he's thoroughly humiliated him, Bush lets Kofi pretend to be in charge.

That's wishful thinking. Its like saying that the GOP pretended that Clinton was in charge Kofi is not humiliated in the least in this situation. This appears that the U.S. submitted to the authority of the UN. That may not be reality, but appearances mean a lot.

Heck, we were up and running before Kofi took his skiis off; he was reduced to "asking" Powell if the UN could be part of "our" coalition.

This is not the general perception. The average world citizen will perceive this as the U.S. being stingy and after being shamed by Kofi and crew, we joined the UN effort in order to save face.

Bush has got to learn, that if you play hard ball, you can't appear to back down. The US would have been better off just withholding any announcement of pledges, waiting until others announced theirs and then pledging a comparable amount.

None of the money or aid is going to help the reputation of the US with the Islamic world or in South East Asia. Even if they do realize that a huge amount of help is coming from the US, you can never buy love. In fact, there is no faster way to lose someone's respect than to buy them something or give them money.

I thought U.N. efforts were "bogged down". So now we are disbanding a group that got aid to the region in hours so the U.N. will get the credit and won't look as useless and inept as it really is?

I do not agree.

Respectfully, could you point out where I've gotten it wrong?

I didn't conclude that, you did:

non sequitur...or as Mr. Spock would say, "illogical."

Where is the strength of leadership? If we can't stand up to the UN, how is this country ever going to take a stand against Islam?

Did you expect something different? Did Bush have you actually believing he was a conservative? He didn't fool me but I share your disgust. Maybe Papa Bush and Clinton can solve the world's problems. They've teamed up like two peas in a pod. What a suprise! (not)

The UN is nothing more than the world's biggest organized crime rganization. Always has been. The UN should have been disbanded LONG ago.

This is worse than not standing up. It is overtly throwing a lifeline to Kofi and the UN. Bush will save the UN, strengthen its hand against the US, and deep six the efforts to establish a new international coalition of democracies to replace the UN.

Sad but true.

"...if the huge relief effort breaks down, the United States would prefer not to be in the lead role where it might get the lion's share of blame."

Oh, they are so cute when they're being so naive. It won't matter what role the U.S. has when the time comes for doling out the blame.
